WEEK THREE Updates: Main Thread - Where the magic triumphs!

Hellooo, everyone, and welcome to WEEK THREE - the final Main Thread for this challenge! 🤩

Why is this thread necessary?

Because the Week 1 and Week 2 threads are now both officially monstrously long 😀 And navigating them can get tricky with the lack of multiple page display.

But Mircea - I hear you say - can we still post in the old thread?

Yes, of course! Feel free to reply to others in the old thread to your heart's content. Just make sure you post any new updates (whether text or video) in this thread instead.

"Oh no, I didn't see this thread, so I posted a new update in the old thread!"

No problem at all! Just tag me (@Mircea) and I'll move your post 😎 These admin powers I got here are actually pretty cool! It turns out I can move individual replies between threads.

Where are the Week 1 and Week 2 threads?

Find the Week 1 thread here! And Week 2 here!

Please use the following format when commenting (feel free to copy & paste!):

  • Etude you worked on:
  • One thing you found easy:
  • One thing you found difficult:
  • (Optional): a video of you performing it!

Sample daily update:

  • Etude you worked on: No. 1
  • One thing you found easy: The polyphony between bass and treble flowed very naturally, I had an easy time playing each line like it belonged to its own voice.
  • One thing you found difficult: I had a hard time creating enough variety throughout the repeated measures.

Feel free to make these updates as short or long as you wish!

    • Etude you worked on: Fernando Sor Op.35 No. 20
    • One thing you found easy: ehh, well, ehh, looking at the score and thinking how good it could sound if only I had bigger hands and/or smaller guitar
    • One thing you found difficult: L hand stretch and contract, and move quite fast and far over the fretboard.

Not to forget the ado with recording editing and uploading

    • Etude I worked on: #13

A wonderful study. It features an Alberti bass texture with a nice melody on top, and to me it feels also like a piano texture.

Interesting: bar 19 with the open b and then d followed by two resolutions from f to e and d to c.

    • One thing I found easy: structure, sightreading
    • One thing I found difficult: Looks not too difficult on first glance, but during sighreading one can struggle by being "surprised" by the last bars.
One challenge: carrying the melody while playing the Alberti bass figure.

It seems that something went wrong with the format of my text.
      Should read as:

easy: keeping the melody lines. Phrasing is very clear and straightforward

difficult: not overdoing the phrasing. Not accentuating the beat too much, it sounds a bit "pushy"

oh, and keeping my face and body still, when music and tension rising....

Etude I worked on: No 8

What I found easy: I've played this before a few years ago.

What I found hard: Trying to make the repeats more interesting. The the third and fourth sections are quite tricky and then the last section which is almost a repeat of the second section catches you out where it changes from the previous version of it. I messed up the repeat of the last section so I rerecorded just that section and replaced the bit I messed up in the first recording with the new recording - you can see the join! Sorry if the title sequence is a bit too long and I tried to make the video fill the frame but managed to crop my left hand from the picture.

    • Derek very nice recording: good sound - and a very good intepretation . Its a long piece with many repetitions, but you make it sound nice all through the piece👏

Derek Thanks for sharing this with us, Derek. And better cropping a hand in a video a bit than to cut the hand in real world. 😏
