WEEK THREE Updates: Main Thread - Where the magic triumphs!

Hellooo, everyone, and welcome to WEEK THREE - the final Main Thread for this challenge! 🤩

Why is this thread necessary?

Because the Week 1 and Week 2 threads are now both officially monstrously long 😀 And navigating them can get tricky with the lack of multiple page display.

But Mircea - I hear you say - can we still post in the old thread?

Yes, of course! Feel free to reply to others in the old thread to your heart's content. Just make sure you post any new updates (whether text or video) in this thread instead.

"Oh no, I didn't see this thread, so I posted a new update in the old thread!"

No problem at all! Just tag me (@Mircea) and I'll move your post 😎 These admin powers I got here are actually pretty cool! It turns out I can move individual replies between threads.

Where are the Week 1 and Week 2 threads?

Find the Week 1 thread here! And Week 2 here!

Please use the following format when commenting (feel free to copy & paste!):

  • Etude you worked on:
  • One thing you found easy:
  • One thing you found difficult:
  • (Optional): a video of you performing it!

Sample daily update:

  • Etude you worked on: No. 1
  • One thing you found easy: The polyphony between bass and treble flowed very naturally, I had an easy time playing each line like it belonged to its own voice.
  • One thing you found difficult: I had a hard time creating enough variety throughout the repeated measures.

Feel free to make these updates as short or long as you wish!

Etude I worked on this week: No. 13

One thing I found easy: the right hand arpeggio pattern.

One thing I found difficult: m. 27 starting with the G#dim7 chord until m. 31 - making those transitions smooth.

Debbie Really nice Debbie. I found those transitions difficult but you made it sound as though they weren't.

    • Etude you worked on: Fernando Sor Op.35 No.15
    • One thing you found easy: nothing
    • One thing you found difficult: there are so many notes to play and the suggested tempo is 80bpm on Quarters. I really practiced a lot, but playing this piece fine will need much time. Sightreading is hard for me and to play this quickly it is necessary to memorize the piece.

I really thought about to post or not to post this recording. Till now no one else did post it anyway, so - here it is 😏

David Chidsey Dear David, I use the small Guitarlift in combination with a footstool ( on lowest or second lowest option ). The great thing about the Guitarlift ist the fact that you don't feel it. Before using it I tried many game aids..."Gitano" "Michael Tröster" "Hopf-Dynarette" , but that's all not really working for me. Being unsatisfied with all the aids I used only a footstool on highest position for many years - that works and is ok.... but with the Guitarlift the guitar-head is much higher than it would be using the normal footstool only. I play this since I got my guitar in August 2019 (the luthier gave it to me as a present to try it out ...). I am so happy with it - I cannot tell you ! But I use the shorter Version of that Guitarlift - so my guitar touches me....😍. Best Regards Olli

    • Etude you worked on: Fernando Sor Op.35 No. 16
    • One thing you found easy: holding the guitar while playing it
    • One thing you found difficult: concentrating on reading the notes and the short memorized parts.
    • Very difficult: not to play too fast and produce scrap and restart recording again and again...

This piece is really fun to play 🥰

Olli nicely done! Thankfully we can all say holding the guitar is the easy thing! Haha! You’ve been very prolific these past three weeks! Bravo!

Debbie thank you for your kind comment. Yes - when the Challenge is over, I practiced 17 new Etudes and tonight I will record No.22 - I play for years now....and the hard truth is - I only have known the piece under the title "Andantino" in Heinz Teuchert Gitarrenschule Band 2 and "Study in B-Minor" titled on many recordings.   Now i saw the Etude 22 and was delighted - I can already play that piece 😂

  • For Op 35 no.22.  Sorry about poor sound quality but here is my attempt of playing this piece. I hadn't played this before and whilst it looks relatively straight forward I soon realised this poses some nice challenges to get smooth and fluent in a couple of weeks. Really enjoyed the challenge and now I can work on this a little bit more and enjoy a beautiful little song.

    • Etude you worked on: Fernando Sor Op.35 No. 20
    • One thing you found easy: ehh, well, ehh, looking at the score and thinking how good it could sound if only I had bigger hands and/or smaller guitar
    • One thing you found difficult: L hand stretch and contract, and move quite fast and far over the fretboard.

Not to forget the ado with recording editing and uploading

joosje you have chosen the longest Etude of all 24 I think ? So, this piece is really not easy to play. It sounds very fine and you played it really passionate 👍🌺
