GENERAL DISCUSSION on the Variation Challenge "Marizápalos"

This is the place for general discussions which don't fit in the main thread or the byweekly updates thread 👋

  • Perhaps you have a guitar question inspired by the challenge?
  • Want to chat about general topics of early music like ornamentation, harmonic etc.?
  • Or just looking to chat with fellow challenge participants about music?

  • Martin, I hate the unnatural fingering from bars 163 on.  I played it as written and as I would without the fingering and I don’t see an advantage to the fingering as written.  I hope you will explain this.

Norman Oh, then you'll be in for a treat tomorrow! The background to this kind of fingering is the campanella effect, but I too think that there might better solutions to what is written in the transcription. The manuscript isn't of much help there since de Murcia is really going crazy with the octaved 4th and 5th string.

    martin Question:

What about the idea to keep on with this challenge and create an new part - maybe called:

"Marizapalos Part II - bringing everything together"

(With the opportunity to keep on practicing, getting the three parts up to higher speed and record the whole piece in some Weeks ?)

    Best Regards

Olli Oh, I think you mentioned this idea already somewhere, but I couldn't find the post anymore! All of you are welcome to continue to work on the piece and bring everything together (the same goes for every community challenge and academy course as we will continue to give advice for everyone in need) and upload a complete version of the piece!

As far as live streams go, we pretty much covered the whole piece in three videos, so there wouldn't be too much information to add (although I was thinking of doing a general Q&A for Marizápalos), but let us know (either in the forum or in today's watch party) if there are any more topics that you need us to cover, then we can think of something 🧙‍♂️
