Who are the guitarists that you think more people should know about?

Dear tonebuddies

Who are the classical guitarists you believe deserve more recognition? Do share their names and, if possible, a favourite piece or performance video of theirs and how you got to know them! This will help us all expand our musical horizons and discover new artists together.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts and suggestions! Let's uncover the less-known maestros of the classical guitar world together!

Post a video of their playing so that we can hear!

  • Recently, I have been listening to Jon Mendle a lot. I love his repertoire, his instruments, but most of all, his exquisite playing. Here are two videos. The first is very low-budget and virtuosic, and the second is more produced and lyrical. Both leave me breathless.

At the moment I write this, he only has 576 subscribers on YT, so yes, I think he deserves more attention.

  • I found this young lady on Shani Inbar on facebook, and find her playing flawless and full of fire. She has a youtube channel, if you have not heard her give her a try.

    • Michael Shirk I just checked out her channel. She plays beautifully and has quite an eclectic mix of traditional and not at all traditional selections. Thanks, Michael!

  • I thought I would throw one more in here, Jack and Elle Davisson from Palo Alto, CA,  brother and sister these kids can play their butts off.  Both will be forces in the guitar world if they keep at it and life doesn't beat them down.

The YT channel has more of both and little Elle i think 10 years old practicing.

This summer I went to see in concert one of the most world well known players and it was a big deception… he did not transmit any emotion. This is a great initiative to give more popularity to some great guitarrists. Talking about emotion and musicality here is a video of Borbala Seres who I knew in Tonebase. One of the best things of tonebase is this, getting to know great musicians

    • Emma I just listened to a few of Borbala’s latest videos this morning. She is incredible. I commented on two of them, and within an hour, she had already replied to my comments.

I think the two-week intensive she did with us was the best one by far (of the ones I have done). She is so gracious, generous, and encouraging.

Emma I really liked her too. Her performances for Bach BWV 1007 Prelude is one of my favorite.

    • Blaise Laflamme Amazing! I had heard of him before, but I never listened to this stunning performance. I like getting all the close up shots of his hands, so we can really admire his virtuosity. When it picks up around 4:00, that is just insanely good!

    • Eric Phillips I'm happy you have heard of him before, he deserves to be more known. Yeah starting at that point it's incredible all the double notes across the voicing, he's doing an incredible polyphonic job, everything is crystal clear.

Last summer I went to Spain for the first time and discovered José María Gallardo del Rey - a legend of classical guitar that neither I, nor anyone else I knew, had ever heard of. I had the incredible fortune of receiving a guitar lesson from him at his place in Sevilla, after which he took me and my friend out for a beer. An incredible guitarist and soul.

One of the amazing facts I learned about him is that he taught Paco de Lucia to play Concierto de Aranjuez. 😮

Steve Pederson I knew of Gallardo del Rey through his 'California Suite' which has been recorded by Irina Kulikova as part of the Naxos 'Laureate' series. I didn't realize he was such a fine player as well. Thanks for the link! It must have been great to have a lesson (not to mention a beer!) with him. (Q: how do you know when you're really, really good at guitar? A: when Paco de Lucia asks you how to play something!)

    • Steve Pederson thank you soooo much for this. I was playing this piece for months and finally managed to memorize and even play it for audience. If I would have heard this recording it would have been so helpful and inspiring. What a treat  to have had lesson with this guitarist…

For me I’d have to say, hands down, Virginia Luque. She was the last student of Andres Segovia. I have never heard anyone play with such a combination of exquisite refinement and fiery passion. She is a virtuoso in both classical and flamenco, has several amazing recordings some of which are collaborations with modern composers, , such as Leo Brouwer, Jorge Morel, and Sergio Assad, among others. I will post here a video of her playing Rumores de La Caleta and a link to her biography on her website. She is truly quite amazing and everyone should know about her. www.VirginiaLuque.com/bio.html
