  • Turlough O"Carolan - Three Songs

To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, I have three Irish songs arranged very simply for the lute. Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) was a blind harpist and singer, and is often considered Ireland's national composer.

    • Bruno Calixto Go for it. I got these arrangements from a book I have, but there are many available online. Here is one source: https://classicalguitarshed.com/sm-celtic/.

Eric Phillips These are great Eric. I had an 'Irish period' back when I played finger style. I have always liked Irish music and O'Carolan in particular. (I even played a bit of penny whistle - badly). Thanks for posting these.

Eric Phillips Very fitting selections for the occasion, Eric! They certainly work well on the lute.

Eric Phillips Nice, Eric! You are so comfortable with the lute, your performance was amazing. Carolan was a good choice! Thanks for sharing!

    • Eric Phillips What a treat!  Thanks Eric.  Those were so fun to hear— and on the lute, yet!

  • Choros No. 1, Section B. I was not really ready to record it, but it was fun. Having some trouble with streches and some chords, so there are a lot of work to do to make it sound better.

    • Bruno Calixto Good, Bruno! When you get going, the rhythm is strong. That seems to me to be the most important aspect of a piece like this.

Bruno Calixto Great job, Bruno. You are getting good grasp of the fingerings. This is a challenging piece but you are making goos progress.

Bruno Calixto I really like that you are posting your progress, which I think is great progress. I think I mentioned earlier that I've attempted this piece, and I know how difficult it is. I think you'll have it before you know it. Keep up the great work!

Bruno Calixto This is coming along well, Bruno! I always struggle with that stretch up to the 'B' at the seventh fret in this section - you seem to be getting it quite nicely!

    • Bruno Calixto Great progress on the Choro Bruno. You're right the extensions are not easy in this piece, event more while trying to keep it legato. Looks like you have recorded in Mono, it sounds only to the left, I don't know if it was intended?

Bruno Calixto que beleza, meu irmão! Great start with this piece! I loved the rubato, is essential to express the choro atmosphere that Villa-Lobos desired. Bravo, meu velho!

    • Blaise Laflamme Thanks! Oh well, I don´t actually know how to record it. I just used my phone, uploaded it to youtube right away, and the sound is terrible. I do intend to buy a mic and I know there is a training session on recording and editing here in the forum... maybe I can have it by the next challenge

    • Bruno Calixto No worries Bruno, I'm more than happy you actually posted! I've never really recorded with my phone but it actually record in Stereo by default, I was surprised yours was in Mono. Have you done any processing in a DAW or settled your phone to record in Mono?
