STACCATO ON SCALES WITH OPEN STRINGS

Technique question:

What are the recommended ways to stop open stings in passages that are staccato? Suppose I am playing a descending C Major 1st (open) position scale using i-m right hand (RH) fingering. I use the RH to stop the note when a note on the same string follows. However, I am trying to figure out what are the best ways to stop an open string as I descend onto the next lower string for the next note. Do I use a left hand (LH) finger (that seems awkward), or the unused RH a finger reaching back to stop the open note, or some other method?

  • Hi David, In the example you mention of a descending C major scale I think I would use my left hand to stop the open strings. You can do it with the same finger you use to play the next note.

So, for example, if you’re going from E on the 1st string to D on the 2nd string, when you place your 3rd finger on the 2nd string, 3rd fret, you do it in a way so that it touches the open 1st string.
