  • Hello,

Finally a big step for me.... A lot of learning to record and post (private) on Youtube but here is my first take of Landslog I.

I used a metronome set 3/4 at 85 bpm which is a lot slower than the normal required speed but the best I can do at this point of time. Many mistakes, few skipped triplets but I is done.

For me a late beginner acoustic player... I feel good about it.

Well done, Andre! I wouldn't worry at all about the tempo - that is really a secondary consideration, and greater fluency will undoubtedly come with continued practice. Getting  all the notes cleanly and in time is what's most important, and you're managing that. Looking forward to more!

Andre Bernier Congratulations Andre on "shipping it" as they say! You put it out there. It sounds clean and controlled, which is great. I am the king of playing things too slow, so I wouldn't worry about that any! 😂

The only suggestion I would make is that I'd like to see what your right hand is doing. I also am missing hair on the top of my head, so I use it as an excuse to cut the top of my head off in my videos. If it's a toss up between my right hand and the top of my head, I will show my right hand every time! 😄 Keep up the good work!

  • I been away from the forum for a bit, but I have been able to get in some practice every day. I'm still on no. III and haven't quite gotten it to recording level just yet, I'm getting close, possibly within the next two days.

I've been able to separate the melody from the chords decently enough, but what's has been a challenge is maintaining that focus while trying to incorporate the dynamics.

I'm going to try to put in some more focused practice tomorrow and hopefully get a recording up soon.

    • Andrew Gray Really nice playing, Andrew. Very smooth. I like the sound of that guitar, too. If you don't mind my asking, who's the maker? I don't recognize the label.

Andrew Gray Great, Andrew, very beautiful! Maybe next time you can put the microphone (or the cell if you used one) a bit distant because - in my opinion - sometimes there was a bit of distortion. Your sound is great, and deserves a good miking!  😉

  • Landslag II - easier for me to learn of the first 4 pieces, something about the chords that resonated with me

  • I've been away from the forum, reason:  brought my iPad for repair. Now I follow TB on smartphone. Inspiring to hear your wonderful submissions.

I decided to work on 4, 9 and 10 - and I took 11 as my new -long term- etude. It's real challenge. Ik hope to record a first try of nr 9 tomorrow.

Btw I  find nr 7 really frustrating.  Counting the repetions and figuring out how fast or slow to move from mp to mf or from pp to ff and at the same time shifting from tasto to normal a/o ponticello and vv is really too confusing for me at the moment. I also have the feeling it's more about performing a complicated test than engaging in a musical .process.. Am I the only one here with this?

    • joosje sorry to read about your iPad, I hope you'll get it back soon because following the forum on a smartphone is more of a challenge than the challenge itself! 😂 For myself I enjoy #7 when I practice it, I should play it more but time's missing with #11, but honestly I find it hard to follow, like you, all the indications that sometimes looks like they were put there for whatever reasons. I approach the piece as an organic moving sound and I mostly base my dynamics on how this movement evolves (harmony-like, patterns, rangs, etc), and sometimes it fits what's indicated 😅. I can't wait to hear your next submission!

    • joosje Yes, I gave up on number 7. I find it enjoyable to listen to Gulli play it, but I did not get any enjoyment out of practicing it. I even took dynamics and tone color out of it, but trying to count the number of repetitions was SO tedious and difficult. I think if I ever did work on it, I would want to take a more improvisational approach to the repetitions, the dynamics, and the timbre changes.

I also found #8, 9 and 11 completely unplayable for me. Again, they are beautiful to listen to, but just beyond my ability. I'll leave those for the virtuosi among us, like you and Blaise Laflamme🙂

    • joosje Landslag VII was too much for me as written so similar to Blaise Laflamme I take a much more organic approach. It seems similar to other minimalism-inspired works like Brouwer's Estudio Sencillos XX and La Espira Eterna with cells that the player interprets how they see fit so for now that's how I'm approaching it. For me, it's a good exercise with the mix of slurs and arpeggios. I was working on the Brouwer etude recently and in David Tannenbaum's notes on it, he seems to warn against playing this type of music too symmetrically/predictably so that might be part of the reason why the instructions in Landslag VII are the way they are since it breaks up any symmetry. Someday when it's under my fingers better I may try to follow the given instructions.

  • Hello everyone,

I enjoyed watching the videos of the beautiful Landslög pieces, I think the challenge deserved to be repeated as it was very special.

I was busy last week so here is my recording of the first one, I will see if I can learn more.

I specially love the first one which reminds me of York's snowflight when I play it.
