Alright, let's get this "song of ice" party started!

So, I'm just on the second one, but I'm taking my time with these and letting them sink in.

After listening back to this performance, I think the thing I'm still missing is rolling into that C on the downbeat of m. 26 as opposed to what I'm doing, which is rolling the chord on beat one.

Anyhow, another challenge with this is getting a good clean recording since it's so exposed. I had to change chairs, because my main one is so noisy. Also, trying to get as little string squeak as possible was quite the challenge. I also really wanted to tap my foot on beats 2 and 4 to help keep tempo during the whole-note chords, so I had to keep that under control.

    • Steve Pederson This is excellent, Steve! That’s one of the best performances I can remember hearing from you. This wasn’t one of my favorite ones from the set, but hearing you play it, I’m liking it more and more.

Eric Phillips Thanks so much Eric! That means a lot. This was one of those rare recordings that I actually felt really good about.

    • Steve Pederson nice play, liked your dynamics!; not easy for me keeping a good balance between treble and bass notes with the slow tempo

    • Steve Pederson That's great, Steve. Really good playing and sound.

You mentioned not sticking the c in m26 but after listening to Gulli play it, I don't think he does either. Since it's a hammer-on I personally think it sounds better landing the b on the downbeat first. It's the first full chord in the second half and the first mezzo forte passage in the piece so there's already a pretty significant change happening so I think it's really up to the performer how to handle it.

      Again, really nice work here.

Carlos Calderon Thanks Carlos, and I wasn't even paying attention to the balance of voices. Thanks for bringing that up. I'll have to pay closer attention to that.

Steve Price Thanks Steve! It is strange, with all the other rolled chords in the piece that the one at m. 26 would be different. I don't see how anticipating the rolled chord and hammer on really makes a difference here.

    • Steve Pederson I think it's just my limited technique that the first note of the hammer-on is accented a little and more suited to the down beat.

    • Steve Pederson beautiful Steve, really like what you've done. My point of view about bar 26 is that if there was no B to play it would have been written the same way than the other rolled chords, then because B is not part of the chord and is an appoggiature it has been written that way to reflect the harmony. The result is almost the same in the execution at the exception the B is not maintained but slightly accentuated to resolve to C.

    • Steve Pederson Very nice Steve. I was surprised at one point when I felt you were Playing Stairway to Heaven (1:24 - 1:29). Great job. Thanks for sharing

Blaise Laflamme Thanks Blaise, and that's a good point about it having to be written that way. I hadn't thought about that.

  • After messing with these for a week I'm feeling more comfortable with them. I'm also getting more comfortable with recording and figuring out how to make the presentation a little better sound and video-wise.

A challenge I'm finding now that I don't remember having before is noisy fingernails on wound strings. I try go at them with a more perpendicular stroke, but there's more that needs to be done for sure.

Thanks to everyone for all the involvement in the challenge far.
