Appalachian Colours - Beauvais

Tonebuddies, here's «Gold» the first colour of the set I was supposed to play at the «Golden Leaves, Golden Tunes» Recital last year. I'll post the second one, Red, in a few days. Take care!

    Beautiful performance and video, Blaise. (And nice to hear some music from a Toronto composer!) Am I right in thinking the capo covers three strings only - so it's Esus4 tuning in effect? Thanks for sharing!

      David Krupka Thank you David, and yes William Beauvais is a fellow Canadian! You're right about the partial capo, it covers strings 5-4-3 on the second fret to provide a transposed equivalent of DADGAD, a very popular tuning in the fingerstyle world.

      Blaise Laflamme That's interesting. A similar tuning - open E (EBEG#BE) - was quite popular in the 19th century. Carcassi thought it important enough to include several pieces for this tuning in his famous method. Indeed, in IMSLP, one can find certain rather obscure romantic era composers who used open E almost exclusively. For some reason, it fell out of favour, and now classical guitarists seem unwilling to try anything other than drop-D. So it's nice to see someone like Beauvais being a little adventurous. As you say, our friends in the fingerstyle world are far more familiar with this territory than we in the 'classical' world are. We should follow their example!

      David Krupka hmmm... interesting but I suspect an open E tuning would make it hard to play in other keys. I like the convenience of the partial capo as you don't have to tune to something else and then don't play out of tune for a few pieces, or use a dedicated instrument for the specific tuning like DADGAD.

    Thanks for sharing. Such a contemplative piece of music, can almost visualise autumn leaves falling. Interesting tuning, I;ve never use a capo on classical guitar before, is this a special capo for classical guitar?

    Very nice, I like the concept of the partial capo. I am not used to that but you made it sound very natural. Beautiful piece.

      Peter Thank you Peter, I was not used to it until I found this work by Beauvais and he has some others too. I'll post the next colour soon, I got some nails problems and the string set I installed the other week (after this recording) was never able to stay tuned! 😅

      Jack Stewart this one is not part of the 4 Appalachian Colours but it's in the same style using a partial capo, very interesting harmonies you get with that!
