PREMIERE: Xuefei Yang Teaches Cavatina by Stanley Myers

For the first time in tonebase history, we are premiering a new tonebase lesson through an exclusive live event featuring the artist herself. Join Xuefei Yang on this premiere celebrating her first-ever tonebase lesson, a deep dive into Stanley Myers' masterpiece, "Cavatina".

Drawing on her vast experience as one of the world's most prestigious concert artists, this lesson focuses on aspects of musicianship and technique, offering valuable insights for learners of all levels. We will be watching her lesson together and subsequently, you will get a chance to ask her some of your own questions.

Since this piece is relatively short, would it be possible to discuss, measure by measure, the best ways possible to keep the flowing "legato" melody going?

Barney Hi Barney! Questions of legato are addressed in the tonebase lesson: https://app.tonebase.co/guitar/courses/player/xuefei-yang-myers-cavatina

In the premiere format, we can only answer general questions or questions that have to do with the production process. We don't have music to look at nor guitars to dive into the featured pieces. However, if you do have questions after you finish the lesson, feel free to put them here or start a new thread under "General discussion" and tag me.

  • Would love to see Xuefei sharing her tips in conquering the first few measures - the difficult barre. Those are the most challenging bars of music in the entire piece.

Xuefei plays all of the sixteenth notes that occur in the melody voice without slurs.  Is there a reason or opinion about that?

Do you have the sheet music that you can download for Cavatina?

Tom Taube Hi Tom! Unfortunately, the piece is under copyright. We cannot provide a downloadable score as we do not own the rights to it. If you look up the piece on Google, you'll find many places to buy it in both digital and paper form.

We do provide downloadable scores for all music in the public domain.

Hi, unfortunately I was not able to attend live but will watch the recorded stream later. Just a hint for those who are interested: there are recorded virtual masterclasses here with Mircea where the Cavatina was played and discussed:

    Have fun,
    greetings to all

  • I just watched this excellent lesson. One thing that has always confused me about this piece is that even though it is written in 3/4 the accompaniment in the John Williams performance always sounds more like 6/8 and so did Xuefei's performance. Is this just me or has anyone else had this feeling.
