DAILY UPDATES (Click Me!) Main Thread - Where the magic happens!

Welcome, one and all, to the Main Thread for this challenge!

This is where the magic happens - the thread where we'll all be posting our daily updates.

Make sure you've read the rules before replying (<- click)

Every day between December 6th and 19th, we are hoping to read your daily updates in this very thread right here!

Please use the following format when commenting (feel free to copy & paste!):

  • Landslag you worked on:
  • One thing you found easy:
  • One thing you found difficult:
  • (Optional): a video of you performing it!

Sample daily update:

  • Landslag you worked on: Landslag no. 1: dark sand dunes with some moss
  • One thing you found easy: The first bar was the hardest one for me to learn, although it looked easy enough on my first try.
  • One thing you found difficult: I liked that it was a single line; it allowed me to focus on every note and it was much easier to read than most pieces I play.

Feel free to make these updates as short or long as you wish!

Marek Tabisz haha oh no! Well, I'm happy I didn't also have new strings, in addition to the guitar with a lot of sustain 😄

Giuseppe Gasparini great job, Giuseppe! So glad you've been enjoying these, and so glad you've joined the challenge 😀 e un piacere averti qui!

By the way, your notes were especially clean in the first half, where the left hand changes were the hardest - very well done on that!

  • I worked on Landslag 3 this morning.

I enjoyed the bashing, which wasn't too difficult.

I struggled a bit with sight-reading the syncopations between the bass and harmony voices, as well as remembering to play with vibrato and the other articulations.

    • I meant to write "bass line" not bashing lol

David Chidsey haha hey, we can all enjoy a good bashing from time to time! 😄 do you want me to edit your original post, to make it say "bass line"? Editing is disabled right now, but I can do it since I have admin powers 😉

Wonderful job on the music! You got all the polyrhythms sounding great!! And nice melodic leading, too 😎 well done! Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this one.

Marek Tabisz beautiful work, Marek! This really put me at ease, it had this relaxed, laid back but relentless and constant flow about it - I think this is exactly what Gulli was looking for when he wrote it... and I loved it!

Had a quick look at Landslog 3 today but I've been concentrating on numbers 1 & 2  as I want to get them going better before moving on

Derek good work, Derek! It's important to spend time on the first few - as long as necessary in order to make them flow the way they are supposed to and really internalize them.

When I wrote the rules to this challenge, it was really important for me that it doesn't become a strict "one piece a day", but rather a two-week row of individual days in which we all take some time to work on something specific. Keep it up and keep us posted!

    • Landslag you worked on: Landslag 3 - rock covered plateau
    • One thing you found easy: the piece in general, fairly sight-readable.
    • One thing you found difficult: getting the basses to sounds clearly over the higher part, especially the higher registers of the bass against open strings.

Roni Glaser very true! Open strings are just so much more powerful than anything else on the guitar, it's really easy to overdo it, and I think this is exactly what Gulli wanted us to work on in this piece 😎 mission accomplished! Haha

Something you found easy:  not sure this qualifies, as I only did the first 5 bars (the rest was too much for me to concentrate on with the kids in the room).  But the fingerings were easy for the first 5 bars :)

Something you found hard:  It took me a few attempts to be happy with my execution of the polyrythms.  They were harder to execute than I thought they would be.

Overall I'm loving these pieces.  I feel like I'm learning something new every day!

Michael this is really cool! I know so well what it's like to try to practice surrounded by a million distractions - and you're doing a wonderful job! You're right, the polyrhythms can be hard... not only the divisions themselves, but just switching from "both voices together" to "each voice on its own" just takes so much getting used to! Keep at it, this is exactly how progress is made! Resilience is the name of the game, and you got it 😎

    • Landslag you worked on: Landslag no. 3: Rock-covered plateau
    • One thing you found easy: Once again, the dynamics were masterfully added in by Gulli at the exact spots where they made sense! Beautiful.
    • One thing you found difficult: Since I still don't have a thumb nail (damn you, broken p!), I had to do a bit of adjustment to get a nice sound on the bass. Also, because of lack of practice the relatively thick ping pong a nail I just put on, I was initially getting a lot of nail noise on the top 3 strings. If I had only half an hour I could have made that work everywhere, but in the ~5 minutes I had, I made it work as best I could. I think it sort of works!
