David Leisner: How to use large muscles in the right hand to prevent injury

I am VERY excited to welcome David Leisner for his first tonebase livestream! We will talk about how to use his idea of using large muscles in the right hand to prevent injuries!

We are going to host this as a Zoom Class because David wants to see and coach you while he is presenting his lecture! For that it is important that you enable your camera and participate with your guitar!

This is going to be very exciting and surely helpful for a lot of us! I am gathering some active participants here that will take part in Davids active coaching with their video enabled and their guitar in their hand!

This is a workshop on how to prevent musicians' injuries. In the process of curing myself of focal dystonia over 25 years ago, I developed some major concepts of how to engage the large muscles when playing the guitar. Besides being a way of curing that condition, I discovered that these ideas can also be used by any player as a way of preventing injury. One of the chapters of my book, Playing with Ease (Oxford University Press), is devoted to describing this approach. In this presentation, I will discuss and demonstrate how these ideas apply to the right hand, as well as interact with each of you, to make sure you understand how to engage your large muscles correctly.

Let me know if you have any questions about this workshop!

My question is about the use of the first phalanx in playing. How can I practice this (I find that I am using more the second) and what benefits does it brings in terms of sound quality, speed, volumen, clearer sound….

  • I viewed the entire livestream - did not enter the zoom session. It was one of the best I have ever attended. I learned so much that will improve both the quality of my tone and reduce the chance of injury. I would have been okay if it had continued longer so that David Leisner could demonstrate how to apply this when playing repertoire.  Thank you.

    • I forgot to mention that I had the privilege of playing in a master class for David Leisner when he was in St. Louis in early 2020, just before the COVID shutdown. He is a great teacher!

Martha Kreipke I am glad that you enjoyed this masterclass and envy you a bit that you had a live masterclass with him in St. Louis! He is a a wonderful person and I really enjoyed having him here on tonebase, he'll certainly be back (though probably we'll need to wait until September as he has some exciting projects coming up!)

  • Watch it on the recording.  This is great.   Thank you.   Perhaps the next lesson could be on the left hand.

Very interesting and lots to think about I am deeply looking forward to a left hand one as I have a rotator issue. It’s actually helped me in some ways because at its height I learned how to play with a lot less tension but I’m certain Mr. Leisner could add some more helpful ideas. It’s extremely helpful to me to learn more about the actual structural mechanics of the arm.

Thank you so much for this great class, I had an eureka moment when he explained that we have to put the knuckle above the string we are playing! That is the way to hit with the phalanx next to the palm! I know it is partly unrelated to the topic but it was just the question I was asking.  So simple and obvious but it has help me a lot. Also I am aware now of my wrist.  Still hard to feel the string up in the large muscles but it opened a whole new way to hit and feel the strokes, and produce even more beautiful sounds in different ways  as  Martin said. Thank you so much Mr Leisner!!! A privilege to be in that session alive .

This was very interesting and enlightening. It would be really helpful if there could be a ‘part 2’ to this to continue from the basics to applying and refining the technique of using large muscles in regular playing.  Thank you for organising this and hopefully the next instalment!

Great class, a master class! I couldn't be on Livestream, then I watched the recording. Thank you Martin for organizing this high-level workshop! And thanks to Mr. Leisner, for sharing with us his knowledge! Like many others, I'll wait for the Part 2... 😉
