Walton: Bagatelle no. 3 "alla Cubana" - Live Lesson (Jan 22) Questions / Suggestions

Alright everyone, here goes one more member-requested livestream - piping hot from the popular demand oven! 🔥🌶️

In one of my recent technique workshops, someone suggested doing a live lesson on the topic of Walton's Bagatelle no. 1. I made a poll asking you whether you think that would be an appropriate piece to tackle, and the general consensus was that it was a bit too advanced to concentrate on right away.

Someone else however (I can't remember who - please make yourself known if you read this! 💙) suggested focusing instead on the third Bagatelle, and when I asked, everyone seemed to love the idea!

Therefore, here we are! Since this is a relatively short piece, if we have any time left over at the end, I might briefly go over aspects of the other Bagatelles, too. Therefore, feel free to send in questions about either one of them! (Although some priority will be given to those targeting the 3rd.)

We are going to be using this very thread to gather suggestions about things he might want to touch on, and offer you a chance to ask your own questions!

  • What questions do you have about this piece?
  • Any particular aspect of this work that you would like me to comment on?

By popular demand, we will be diving into this rightful standard repertoire masterpiece by English composer William Walton, comparing existing versions including an exclusive look at the original manuscript score and various Julian Bream additions, as well as working our way through possible fingerings!

Hello, what a beautiful piece! Thank you! Could you share the score before the class please?

      Emma Thank you Emma!

The piece is not in the public domain for me to share in .pdf form right here, but a simple google search will definitely lead you to it, as it has been a part of core guitar repertoire for a while and is therefore widely shared around the internet.

If you'd like to continue working on it, I would certainly recommend buying a copy, perhaps one of Bream's edition.

I do have a very special surprise for the livestream though, as I will also be using a much less widespread version to compare 😉

  • So glad you are doing this class on Bagatelle 3 - a piece I worked on last year.  Very interested to learn how you approach the rhythmic figures from measure 8 through 15. Did Walton expect a strict execution of these measures?  I have heard performances where players take some liberty in tempo.  Grateful for your skill and commitment to share your tested experience!
