Week 3: Draft // Apr 5th
Welcome to Week 3! This week we focused on form, setting parameters, and drafting in aims of completing more short pieces.
The assignment for this week is to blueprint (plan) our ideas into whole pieces (arch map, graphic drawing, text) and complete at least 1 rough draft.

Hi, Ashley.
This week I haven´t sent my homework, but I´ve done it (at least part of it). I chose a simple 4 note motive and played with it for a couple of days. I´ve barely had time to have a look at my fellow composers´work (awesome, by the way). The fact is that I need so much time to write. I mean, I don´t even start writing if I´m not sure I´ll have 2-3 hours for the task, wich happens only once in a while. I go nowhere with, say, half an hour. Ideas seem to take their time comming up. Any tips on this? My other question is: when do you stop rewriting if you are not happy with the final "product"?

Igor I think you shouldn't prevent yourself from writing music if you enjoy doing it. I also don't have a lot of time to dedicate to it, unfortunately, so I usually sketch and work out ideas in my head while I'm doing other things, then I play or write some fragments here and there when I find good ones. Last time, for week 2, I got the idea while watching the stream, based on my previous sketch, then I wrote the motive down. I went back on Thursday evening to sketch it out, then leave it til Saturday evening to finally complete and engrave it. I was then too tired to record it, so I did the recording on Sunday morning, to give others an idea of how it sounds. About when do you stop rewriting... when you do not have enough time I guess

Igor thanks for sharing your thoughts! I really agree so much with what Blaise Laflamme said..it's important to be patient with ourselves and the process. Also, consider that having less time should actually help you get into the mindset of really learning how to identify what is really important and worth the precious time that you do have. think of it like high-intensity-interval-training. Doing more intense work in shorter amounts of time can really wield some great results!

Igor I use the voice recorder on my iPhone a lot just to record a snippet of an idea I can go back to. If I don’t have a guitar near me I’ll just sing or hum something. Every little bit helps!

Debbie really great idea! i can't even say the amount of recordings i have just like that, and how many times its been helpful to be able to go back and use past ideas in a time crunch!

Here is my first draft (Lullaby)
Things I found easy: the idea appeared out of nowhere and suddenly, right away, ready in my head...
Things I found difficult: it was difficult (and still is!) to "fine-tune" details such as individual chords and overall playability (I didn't want to write something extremely difficult, but also too easy - it's hard to balance these elements ...)

I would like to add that the "construction" was planned more or less like this: A - slightly atonal, B - D major and a return to A with Coda in D major

Marek Tabisz Hi Marek - look forward to hearing it. I can relate to some of the difficulties - I've even considered turning what I've written so far into a duet to make it playable!

I know - playability is very easy with duet or quartet Here is the almost finished version. I'll record it over there sometime -
Now I have a real challenge ahead - DANCE !!! It must be after a lullaby like this! And - unfortunately - I can't do it, it stresses me a lot ...
