Carulli Larghetto in G minor Op 192

I came across a performance of this piece on YouTube by Nicola Jappelli that I really love, so I thought I'd try to work on it myself. The score is attached.

Here are my goals for the piece:

  • Use fingerings that make sense both musically and technically.
  • Play with intentional and effective dynamics, articulation, and tone color.
  • Write and execute a cadenza to be added between the B section and A' section (measure 25). Jappelli does this and I'd like to try it too.

I've committed it to memory now, so here's an update. I'm also playing it a bit faster.

Eric Phillips This is sounding really good. I've not heard of this before, so added bonus of learning new music..🙂

    • don Yes, I hadn’t heard it before last week either. It’s just a little piece in Carulli’s giant method book Op 192. Up above is another nice one from the same book (Moderato in B minor). To me, it’s like finding gold in a pile of rocks.

Eric Phillips This is always very nice feeling when you discover nice pieces out of no where.

Very nice, Eric! I really like the cadenza that you've added - it really brings the piece up a 'level'. I think we forget that flourishes like this were once a normal part of the performance tradition. (I think somewhere (maybe op.1 (?)) Giuliani provides a dozen or more examples that probably warrant study.)

Eric, I watched the first and this last one, big improvement. You play it beautiful with plenty of colours and vibratos

    • Emma Thanks, Emma. I think the music calls for a good bit of drama.
