Steve Goss: Interpretation and Analysis | Rhythm and Rubato in Bach, Sor, and Falla (Mar 20) Questions / Suggestions
Alright everybody: here we go with rhythm and rubato! As promised, Steve and I will continue to dive into the topic of analysis and how to apply it to your interpretation - this time from a whole new angle!
This is going to be the second of three livestreams looking at the same set of three pieces from very different analytical perspectives:
- This session will focus on rhythm, rubato, and feel
- The previous livestream focused on harmony and structure (<- click)
- And the final one will look at musical style and using improvisation as a tool for learning repertoire
Given how different this topic is from all others, there is absolutely no need to have watched the previous livestream to attend this session. None at all!
Like last time, I am personally going to be performing in all of these, and I am still really excited about that

We are going to be using this thread to gather suggestions and questions!
- What questions do you have on this topic?
- Any particular area you would like us to focus on?
In this session, Steve Goss will discuss intricacies of musical interpretation with a focus on rhythm, rubato, and feel. Three works will be used to demonstrate: Bach's Prelude from the 1st Cello Suite (BWV 1007), Sor’s Study in C Op 6 No 8 (Segovia Study No 1), and Falla’s ‘Homenaje pour le tombeau de Claude Debussy’.
These pieces were already analyzed from a harmonic and structural perspective in Steve's last tonebase livestream. However, due to the highly unique point of view applied in today's example-rich lecture, no participation in any previous session is a prerequisite for today's show.

Really good, this topic, and the information that Steve gave, with the examples. All of great value for us, who seek to improve our playing. To play a 3voice piece like Sor’s (regarded simple) study and be as effective as a string trio, is not an easy task. Also, (I played the cello for a while ) just the gesture of bowing the bass notes in the Bach prelude gives this special ‘agogic’ feel , which we could try to imitate with the thumb stroke, taking the time , but not accentuating in loudness ...
