Prelude No 5 in E major

I wanted to find a piece that would crossover between the Etude Challenge and this mini-challenge, but I could not find any “studies” by Barrios. This prelude, however, I think makes for a great study in arpeggios, slurs and shifting. In fact, it reminds me a little of HVL’s Etude No 2 (although it’s quite a bit easier).

  Blaise Laflamme Just checked it out, together with Estudio de Concierto No 2. They both look very easy. My plan is to be able to play both of them by this afternoon, while blindfolded, with one hand tied behind my back. You can choose which hand. 😀

  Eric Phillips Very nice, Eric. (And very impressive that you managed to post this within two hours of the challenge 'start' time!!) In addition to the concert studies there are, in the Jesus Benites edition of Barrios's works, ten (by my count) pieces entitled 'Estudio'. The 'Estudio para ambas manos' in volume 3 is not only a great technical workout (at a reasonable tempo (!)) - it's a beautiful piece of music as well:

  David Krupka Thanks, David. Foolishly, I didn’t even look in IMSLP for Barrios studies (where there are many). I just went through my own binder of stuff I had previously printed out. So much music, so little time!

Hi to all, i,m posting Preludio en Do menor……I recorded it a couple of months ago…..

I need to improve speed and sound ……any recommendation for sound recording gear is wellcome….cheers

  JUAN ALONSO That is sounding very good, Juan! I have picked up this piece several times, but never brought it through to completion. It’s much harder than it sounds.

  JUAN ALONSO Very nice, Juan! I agree with Eric, this little prelude is much more difficult than it appears! I think your tempo is about right already - I don't know that it needs to be any faster.

  JUAN ALONSO Very nice, Juan. I've looked at this piece a couple of times--it's harder than it looks. I like a slow tempo, but if you'd like to push it a bit, you could try memorizing it and possibly practicing with dotted rhythms. I think what would help it musically is playing with dynamics--building rainbows of sound.

  JUAN ALONSO great choice and you're already doing a great job! The legato, for both harmony and melody, is a long term shot in this piece, a lot of work for what the listener hear. About gear it all depends on needs and budget, what are you using at the moment and what do you want to achieve?

Prelude No 5 in E major (June 11)

Here is another shot at this piece. I am trying to be a little more accurate to the score with my bass note damping this time. The score calls for a faster tempo (quarter-note = 132), but this is as fast as I can get it.

  Eric Phillips This is coming along nicely, Eric. Your tempo works quite well - I wonder if the indication in the score is editorial or original. (It doesn't seem to me that Barrios was in the habit of specifying tempo so narrowly.) Similarly, I wonder if the rests in the score are from Barrios himself. As I understand it, little of his music was published during his life.

  David Krupka I’m not sure how much is from Barrios. I suspect the tempo indication in my score comes from Edson Lopes. The rests in the bass voice, however, just seem logical asa means of clarifying the harmonies.
