Hi Mircea, this is a great topic -thank you.

    2 observations / questions

    1) as you said in the first session each practitioner( Tamayo, Clerch, Iznaola, Barrueco....) seems to have their own take on key aspects - especially, for example,  rh thumb placement for stability - thumb moves from string to string; stays on 6th or 5th string for all top 3 strings in fingers; floats for bass strings in the fingers - or thumb on the soundboard. It would be good to know the options and what seems to be the reason for each variant

    2) Can you help with references to the texts by key players e.g. Marco has a great little volume full of gems - but it can be difficult to relate to some of the concepts - e.g. a finger on the top string - rh fingering patterns to avoid. Pointing students to the key texts or other materials also helps

    Thanks again

    David

David hi David! Thank you for joining and for your valuable comments!

      1) I personally think the thumb placement question is not super important.

As far as I know, Marco Tamayo and Joaquin Clerch have pretty similar thoughts about where the thumb should rest, and they both understand the validity of most widely accepted options (thumb on the 4th, 5th or 6th strings, and staying in place versus moving with every string).

Both Joaquin and Marco (and I) choose a string to rest on (4, 5, or 6) depending on what exactly the other fingers are doing at the same time. I have noticed that Marco tends to move it around a little more than Joaquin and I, but not significantly so. And most importantly, I don't think it makes a big difference.

The most "divergent" positions I've seen are Rafael Aguirre's, who flexes the thumb a la Paco de Lucia, and my own (I place it quite far inside and under the hand, as if the index was going to play above it, in the "thumb under" lute position - as I demonstrated in my stream).

I've not personally seen any of the Cuban school masters placing their thumb on the soundboard for playing rest stroke on the bass strings, but it's quite possible that I was simply not observant enough.

      2) That's a great book! For anyone curious, Marco wrote a great text on this topic that you can buy here: http://shop.marcotamayoedition.com/en/Marco-Tamayo---Essential-Principles-for-the-interpretation-on-the-classical-guitar-.html

It might take a while to reach our non-European listeners, but it's worth it!
