Wow, good topic! I started trying no nails this year, and it's been almost 4 months since I cut off all my nails, no complaints so far. 😄

Looking forward to this one. I have never been able to have long nails because they have a weird curl at the sides and I'm always breaking them so I just don't try anymore.

  • This was a great stream with a great artist, he definitely masters the nail-less approach very well! 👌This is something I have to try at some point, and at the same time it's a sound that is at the opposite spectrum of what I'm currently doing. 😵

I went no nails about ten months ago and have never looked back. I did it gradually. Filing my nails down just a tad every day until they were gone. During those days I played Villa-Lobos Etude #1, Brouwer #6, and various scale studies to help develop the feel of no nails. It's important to find the right point of attack on the finger tips and to escape the string properly to get the best tone. I play more on the right side of my fingers to get the tone I want. It takes practice but I think it's worth the effort. Brandon did a nice presentation in representing no nails as a viable option in today's classical guitar world. His playlist is a good place to start to hear the exceptional virtuosity that is possible with this approach. OK I'm very enthusiastic about no nails in case you couldn't tell!

This was so needed on this platform.  So many people who love classical guitar just cannot have nails…me included and for a long time I told myself it wasn’t worth playing if I couldn’t have nails because I could not get the sound I hear in my head out of my guitar anymore.  I wish I could go back and slap myself for listening to all the people on the forums saying nails were the only way to play with good tone.  I signed up for Brandon’s class before even knowing about this live stream and I could not be happier.  My love for my instrument has been rekindled and I hope this gives inspiration to others on the fence due to nail issues.  Thank you Brandon for the info and Tonebase for giving a platform for this info.  I’d love to see way more of it!
