Here's the updated score with all the markings from the workshop, the ornament markings indicate the frets that are supposed to be trilled! šŸ™ŒšŸ§™ā€ā™‚ļø

So it seems I will be the first one to post an update! Stay strong and keep motivated, I look forward to all of your submissions šŸ§™ā€ā™‚ļø

    • Section you worked on: 2nd set of variations, bar 73-144
    • One thing you found easy: I really enjoyed trying to accentuate the different character of each variation! Music as a language is so universal, even with the "limited" sonority and harmonic material of renaissance and baroque music we can understand different kinds of musical gestures without any words!
    • One thing you found difficult: This set of variations really had some really non-guitaristic stumbling blocks! I found that from bar 109 up to 121 it's really easy to get lost with the fingering of your right hand. Moreover, bar 106 has a phrasing implemented within the original fingering of the facsimile, but it's so hard not to sound like you have a hiccup!

martin Bravo Martin. So nice to hear this section played properly. Even though I haven't posted an update this week I have been stumbling over the fingerings - so I now have your video for reference. Thank you - have a great weekend

    • martin sooo beautiful! I love the way you accentuate the different character of the variations . Your diminutions (or whatever theyā€™re called) are so well placed. Thank you so much for posting it.

martin thank you for posting Matin. Itā€™s good to have something to refer to. Iā€™m behind on my practice this week because Iā€™ve been under the weather after getting THE vaccine but Iā€™m better today so Iā€™ll start tackling this section.

martin that sounds wonderful Martin. I'm struggling on this one. I think it's because it's such a long piece I find it difficult to piece it all together. Hoping to work on it more tonight and over the next few days. Your recording makes me want to work harder on the piece.

  • Section I worked on: 2nd set of variations (73-144)

Something I found easy: note image, no complicated passages or chords. Plus,  itā€™s very inspiring to get so close to the musical tradition of this period/region via the manuscript. Martin showing us the way to practice.

Something I found difficult: making it sound fluent and rhythmical, the way I imagine it should sound. I heard some vocal versions and solos on original instruments. It gradually changed the way I understand the music. I do practice , but canā€™t find the way to do it.  Hope to record some of it this weekend.

Section I worked on bars 73 to 145

Something easy, nothing really but I am enjoying playing around the contrasts in the 4 subsections.  I hope I can record this part before Tuesday

something difficult among all is to interiorise the fingering pi pi in strings that are close giving it the right tone. Also the strumming makes here and there is this section need more ā€œgraciaā€... the record of Martin will help me a lot

Emma Awesome, glad you like the concept of contrasts in this piece! Pi Pi took me quite a while as well to internalize and balance, but the effort is worth the result šŸ§™ā€ā™‚ļø

      martin thank you for your

comment! I am practicing hard to see if I can produce a video before tomorrow but I donā€™t know... that thrill in bar 107...    bars 99 and 100 and a few others. Also I have to regularice the speed as I have been practicing in blocks. Well ... letā€™s see ... but thank you! Your comments are encouraging!

I was feeling sick Tuesday through Friday but I am better now. Unfortunately, I am behind but, oh well. Today I worked with the class video and Martinā€™s recording for measures 73-144 trying to get fingerings, ornaments, and phrasing down but it is a lot of work. I broke it up into smaller sections. It feels manageable but I wish I had those lost days back.

    • Debbie happy to hear you are back in shape. Hope it wasnā€™t COVID?. This Murcia challenge is really hard work for all of us. It looks like weā€™re a bit intimidated...?
