Interactive Masterclass with Martin Zimny

I am EXTREMELY excited to do my next interactive masterclass. It is so wonderful to directly interact with all of you and share this wonderful learning experience together with you!

You know the drill, we have four spots for roughly 10-20min of teaching and hanging out with each other in a way that everybody can learn from each other!

I have four spots á 15min, sign up now, and don't forget to attach scores before the class.

Participants

Eric Phillips  Sor’s Andante Largo Op 5 No 5

@Steven Liu - Valseana by Sergio Assad

@Tom Reed - Aranjuez or Campanas De Alba

This will be an interactive Livestream, so let me attach all the info needed for this exciting new tonebase LIVE format!

What do I need?

  1. We will use ZOOM for the interactive part of Livestream (the same piece of software ZOOM for the interactive part of Livestream (the same piece of software that we have been using for the Virtual Hangouts). While it is not necessary to download the software, I would recommend it as it runs more stable as the browser version. In order to have the best audio quality, you can activate the option to
  2.  Preserve Original Sound, here, you find the documentation on how to activate that.

    • Martin Okay great. Then I’d like to participate. I’ll play Sor’s Andante Largo Op 5 No 5. An unfingered score is attached. Would it be helpful to you if I gave you a version with my fingerings?

Eric Phillips Fantastic! Your fingerings might be helpful, but it's more important that you know which spots are troubling you, so we can focus on them in the short amount of time!

    • Martin Here is a photo of my score with some fingering. Here are my biggest technical issues:

      • Measures 11-16 The fingering is very awkward and cramped, but I can't find any better solutions. This is the part that gives my left hand the most pain when I repeatedly practice it.
      • Measures 22-24 are pretty difficult. I did simplify the D chord in measure 23 by taking out the F# on the fourth string. I practiced this spot as written for a full week using the "3-minute drills" from this month's challenge, but I still only hit it successfully maybe 50% of the time. Removing the F# in the middle voice makes it a lot easier, and I doubt too many people would even notice unless they were very intently listening for it. I have found some scores (like Edson Lopes') that also take out this note. That said, these measures are still challenging for me, with or without the F#.
      • In the minor section, I struggle most with measures 33-37. Again, I simplified the C7 chord in measure 33, taking out the G. It still contorts the hand, but it takes away the shift.

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the musicality as well. Any ideas you have around this would be great. I know time is limited, however, so if you just want to pick one thing to help me with, I would be fine with that.

Eric Phillips This is a fantastic help, I will dive into this, go into full nerd mode, and hopefully come up with some insights for you!

    • Martin I always appreciate any thoughts you have!

BTW, I looked it up. Nerd: "a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious." It may as well have just had a picture of me! 🙂

Steven Liu Great! What piece would you like to work on? Or some general technique input maybe?

    • Martin Hi, Martin, due to the time zone difference (HK time 2 a.m.), I may not be able to play in front of you.  That said, I have pre-recored this video for your comments on any aspect as you consider approrpiate.

I really look forward to receiving your helpful comments (as always) in the coming masterclass.  Many thanks in advance and have a nice weekend!

Steven Liu Gotcha! Let me know if you have any special sections or issues you would like me to focus on!

I don't know if you've seen that, but I've recorded this piece in my little Youtube phase! It's one of the most beautiful pieces I have ever played!

    • Martin wow Martin, I am speechless by the beauty of your performance, recording quality, and the beauty of this particular Sergio's composition itself. Sergio's works are usually so nice, I feel like they are both Jazzy and classic, modern, interesting in harmony and rich in rythm variations. A really great contemporary composer!

    • Martin Wow you played beautifully!  I don't have any special issues in mind.  You may comment on any aspect you think appropriate.  I always find your comments to be particularly helpful and insightful.  Thank you.

I'm not quite sure yet. I am still working on Concerto de Aranjuez from the Spanish community challenge, but it's way tougher than I realised and maybe (certainly) I'm not ready for it yet! I am still plodding along with it though and would be very interested in some expert advice so I'm tempted to go for the 1st movement of that. I've also recently begun Campanas Del Alba and would like the sections I know to sound smoother and with a richer tone ideally

Tom Reed Wow, that's awesome stuff! I have never played Aranjuez nor Campanas Del Alba, but I'm sure we'll have a meaningful discussion around either of those pieces!

Martin I'm looking forward to it! Can I check what the best way to upload scores is? I can't find either on tone base so would need to copy the printed scores?
