Come Heavy Sleep, instrumental version sheet music

Can anyone tell me where I can find the sheet music for this instrumental version? David Russell plays it on his renaissance album. I can only find it with the vocal. --Thanks!

Hi Palmer - I don't see such a piece in the track listing for Russell's 'Renaissance Favorites for Guitar' if this is the CD you are talking about. There is a solo version of the song 'Come away (come again)' though. Is this perhaps what you are looking for?

Thanks David, you're right. I had my music on shuffle and assumed it was David Russell. I will have to go and look to see where I heard it. Thanks for your reply!!

Hi Palmer! There are many versions of Come Heavy Sleep for guitar solo - the most famous one of which is probably Benjamin Britten's, incorporated at the very end of his Nocturnal after John Dowland op. 70. This is certainly not the easiest or most straightforward one to play, though, given that it is written on two staves and placed at the end of a very difficult piece. It does however function as a standalone transcription of the song if you do want to use it that way.

Otherwise, if you've ever wanted to start working on a big project, you can even make your own version, based on Dowland's original. It's a short song, after all! Here is a copy of the First Booke of Songes or Ayres, where Come Heavy Sleep is labeled No. XX. In this .pdf, it's on page 23.

I encourage you to play with making your own transcriptions even if, in the end, you will play someone else's. Being aware of the original manuscript is the best way to distinguish between a good and a bad arrangement. Let me know if you need any pointers on how to do this!
