SUBMIT SHEET MUSIC EXCERPTS for Week 3's Livestream Here!

Hey everyone, so like the rules thread says, in the Week 3 Livestream: Excerpt Clinic" (May 17th), we will be looking at excerpts you suggest, yourself.

These can be from standard repertoire pieces or from pieces I've never seen before. Submit the sheet music for these excerpts here and I will feature them in-stream!

Feel free to choose something related to one or more difficult scales, arpeggios, hard-to-coordinate passages, or anything else you need technical help with.

I will provide one or more possible fingering solutions, technical tips, or a practice roadmap for you.

  • Hi Mircea,

I was thinking if Etude N. 11 from VIllalobos bars : 49-60 (or less) could be something we can work on. The right hand, specially the 2 thumbs acentuating the D in 50-51 and at the same time the "seisillos" five EEEEE with imami. I begin to play only that part of the Etude as exercise for the right hand and the left is also difficult, but may be we can do something else with the left but leaving the "problem" of  EDE acentuating D and the arpegio.

    Thanks, Nora

  • Hi Mircea, I wonder if prelude No 1   by Villalobos, bars 24 to 32 (the end)  could be a good passage to dive into.  Thank you, Calin

Reminder:  Please cover the second scale at beginning of Villa Lobos Etude 7 with your suggested fingerings.  Your fingerings in the first scale are great!  thanks!

  • I've been working on a piece called Desert Sketch by Frederic Hand. Here is an arpeggio section at the end of the piece. It has fingering in it, I presume from Fred. I'd be curious how you would finger the right hand. Would you use preparation?

Eric Hi Eric! Ooh interesting, I've never seen this piece before. I second Marek Tabisz 's question about the tempo. I will do my best on this one!

    • Eric The tempo is quarter note 72-76, so not too fast. The tenuto markings do help with the challenging chord changes. His fingering uses a lot of repeated thumb, and I was just wondering if there might be a better solution.

Hi Mircea. I always struggle a bit with campanella section in Barrios' Vals Op 8 no 4, especially the end of the sections. From a personal perspective it would be great to look at this. Alternatively I could brush up on the piece and submit it for a masterclass.

    I'll upload the music later.

    Thanks Derek

I'll see what I can tell you, I've never played this piece but I taught it to a couple of different students over the years.

    Hi Mircea,

I find the following passages totally difficult. Maybe they are interesting and worth addressing.

    Proposal 1:

Antonio José, Sonata, IV (Final), the first 5 lines. The passage might be pretty cool as a technical exercise, combining scales with rasgueados and chord changes. Also, these lines occur about a thousand times in the fourth movement - so we've already would have covered a good part of this super difficult movement! :).

    Suggestion 2:

Ponce, Theme variado y final:  The finale, second page down and penultimate page down. Here there are slured triplets which I find extremely difficult! It would be great to hear your tips on this! (Maybe a little bit off-topic)..

    Suggestion 3:

Rodrigo, Tres piecas españolas, Passacaglia, page 3 at the bottom and page 4 at the top - the section with the sextuplets...

    Thanks!

    Many greetings,

    Dominik

Hello Mircea, thank you for this challenge! I am preparing Serenata española and would like to learn how to best practice and digit  the chromatic scale bars 75 and 76 (especially) and 128, 129 ( only if possible) Can not decide in which strings and if using or not free strings for changes. Thank you

Emma Hi Emma! Could you please send in a quick screenshot of the specific passage you mean, or circle it on a page? Different versions of Serenata Espanola have different measure numbers, and I want to make sure we're talking about the same places.

Hi Mircea! My submission is this Mertz Op. 23 No. 6 Capriccio. I used to have in my repertoire and I’d like to bring it back. I remember struggling with mm. 24&25 so before I tackle it again I’d like some RH fingerings that really work. Right now in m. 24 it’s pmpipmim but I wonder if pmpipapm might work better, or whatever you think. Thanks!
