Hi, Just put new strings on my new guitar, sounding better to me. But maybe a bit out of tune? Also cut my right tumb yesterday, but otherwise, still loving to practice this piece. The second part I play a bit slower, but I hope next time I can play the whole piece in one tempo :)

Also it's becoming easier for me to play without being influenced by the "camera" and also being able to continue playing and post it, while making mistakes, saying as a perfectionist ;)

Hedda Koning  You keep improving on this great piece Hedda!!  Keep going!

I believe this is from Ponce's Suite in A minor, correct?

Anyone know which edition is best and most played by performing artists?

    • Hedda Koning well done, Hedda, this is sounding very nice. Good strings, they are so new  you hear more squeaking, but that wi pass, they sound clear.

The 2nd part is quite demanding, but you can do it. So, I look forward to your next submissions

Barney I have the Berben edition (1974) transcribed and fingered by Abloniz. I haven't practiced this well  enough to review.

Hedda Koning Beautiful job, Hedda! As said Joosje, the 2nd part is demanding, but you can do it very well. Thanks for sharing!

Hedda Koning Way to go Hedda. One thing I know from playing Weiss is that it looks easy, but it really isn't. Keep up the good work!

Jack Stewart thank you very much for your feedback!

It's very helpful. I just practiced some scales and when doing them slowly I could control my finger movements much better. Afterwards I studied the allemande again and I already noticed my left hand movements went better. Will keep working on it.

Barney Thanks for your feedback. Yes I mentioned that in my first post about this allemande. Segovia played it on the record (very old one) as Weiss, but later on I found out it was Ponce's. Will be easier to find sheet music ;)

joosje thank you very much! I just got a new guitar and I was already happy with it, but with the new strings, it sounds and plays better.

I'm happy I'm really working on the second parts, concentrating on one piece is very helpful.

Hedda Koning That is great to hear! You have made great improvement on the Allemande, and this should help.

Hedda Koning Thanks Hedda.  Today I found it in my files in an old Weiss book by Recordi publishing Co.

    • Barney Hedda Koning the edition I have was actually the transcription that Abloniz made after Segovia's interpretation of the suite, and before Ponce was made known to be the composer. The transcription is accurate,  Segovia himself was positive about editing the score, as long as the source was not made public....

      joosje very interesting!

thanks a lot. The score I play from is handwritten and I found it a long time ago in the library (by Weiss). It seems similar to how Segovia plays the piece. I’m very interested in “your” score. Is it also handwritten?

joosje my version says by Jose de Azpiazu.  Not sure how it compares with the recorded version by Segovia;  have not compared it yet...

    • Hedda Koning handwritten? That's interesting.  By whom? Which library? It might be the score that Segovia himself used, pretending it was the  transcription from an unknown Weiss facsimile found in some anonymous library in Prague or so.... I agree the notes you play seem similar to the score I have. No, mine is not handwritten. Officially published by Berben, likely with the approval of Segovia.

Barney Azpiazu, I didnt know he edited this suite. Does it give Ponce's name as the composer? I know Azpiazu from other transcriptions of Segovia repertoire. I'm not sure how their relation was....

joosje My score is in a book published 1969 by G. Recordi &Co.  It says " S.L. Weiss Album" and contains, Air, Gigue Prelude, Sarabande, Presto, and the Suite in a-moll.  There is no mention of Ponce.

  • Late to the game as well. Speaking of the music we love,  posting here is the

first piece I attempted to learn on guitar, many many years ago...  Still needs work at many levels.  More legato on the second part and a better ponticello sound , more consistent overall sound quality, and less squeaking, . Any other suggestions are welcome.
