Cecilio Perera: Find Your Own Voice With Your Guitar (Jan 29) Questions / Suggestions

Alright everyone 😀 so excited about this one! Hope you're all doing well. This week, my great friend Cecilio Perera will be joining us for a very unique livestream!

He will be talking to us about finding our own unique artistic identities, interpreting and understanding music, style, expression, tone, arrangement, and more.

Drawing on his international concert and recording experience, he will be guiding us on a quest to not just play notes, but provide "the meaning of notes", as the great Spanish cellist Pablo Casals used to say.

Olli hi Olli! There is always a bit of downtime (usually anywhere between 5 - 20 minutes) after I post these threads during which the link won't work.

I need the forum link first, to include in the event description before I add the actual event on tonebase. Unfortunately, adding live events is all manual at this point, and still a relatively long and complex process which takes a few minutes to complete.

There is a workaround where I make a hidden thread first and then only move it back to this visible forum once the live event has already been added on tonebase.  However, in cases such as today, where I'm adding a lot of events, going that route would add a lot of extra time and not provide much benefit.

Everything should be working (as of ~10 minutes ago) 😉

Thanks for a great session with Cecilio. What is the piece you reference to at time stamp 51:50?

Philip Hi Philip! It was the Prelude no. 1 by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Very happy to hear you enjoyed the show!

    • Mircea Thanks Mircea. 🙂I realized I gave the wrong time stamp. I could of course recognize Prelude No. 1 - I play it myself [facepalm].

I meant this time stamp: 51:54. What song and arrangement for guitar?

Philip Oh! That is Chan Chan, popularized worldwide by the Buena Vista Social Club.

Unfortunately, there is no arrangement for guitar that I know of. I was playing a rumba accompaniment pattern that we came up with during my time improvising on this piece with my colleagues from the Robert Schumann university in Düsseldorf.

If you want, I can write this pattern down for you, but it's just a rhythmic pattern on which I've added parts of the melody on the spot.

      Here is the original:

  • Sorry for the mistake Mircea! And thanks for the link - beautiful melody. Please and thank you, I would like that pattern very much. 🙂

I also appreciated Cecilio's comment about defending your interpretation while giving yourself freedom to interpret music. There are no set rules as such other than time and key signature, dynamics, and the notes themselves, but you can't just play a piece randomly or without having a clear direction.
