Expression Through Contrast: Continuity and Anomalies

Dear friends,

After a flurry of Latin-American lessons, we venture into broader pastures to explore how thinking strategically about contrast in music can help us achieve maximum expression.

Can't wait!

Emmanuel

Music can be thought of as storytelling through sound. Expectations are set and met, or otherwise breached. Each transgression of continuity in the musical narrative provides a moment of heightened expression, where the ear is surprised and the mind is engaged.

Through a variety of musical examples From Bach to Bogdanović, Emmanuel Sowicz will explore how contrast can enable us to shape musical stories regardless of period or style.

  • I have a question/comment about this topic.  Would it be also possible to explain 'what we  shouldn't try to do in a piece' as it may be considered inappropriate. Hope that makes sense? Regards. Dennis.

  • There is a piece I am playing at the moment Bach - Sarabande BWV 1002 - this would be interesting how you interpret the addition of contrast. Thanks Dennis
