An Introduction to Musical Phrasing – how to make your own decisions

Phrasing –we often hear– is at the heart of musicianship. But what exactly does ‘phrasing’ mean? What are its elements? What constitutes persuasive phrasing? Most importantly, how can *you* learn to make effective phrasing decisions? In this livestream, Emmanuel Sowicz will present an introduction to phrasing, offering some practical concepts that can help you make your interpretations more compelling and engaging. Musical examples will include music by Bach and Albéniz.

I'm also curious as to why guitar composers in the Classical/Romantic era weren't using phrase markings like piano composers were.

  • After viewing the recording of this lesson, I think I can begin to approach phrasing for the first time. The basic definition and demonstrations of the "toolbox" made a topic that has been confusing for me (for decades!!!) so much more clear. Thank you.
