Interactive Practice Room: Tremolo!
TREMOLO! As I've immersed myself into this technique since the dawn of our Practice Diaries, I want to share my favorite exercises and approaches to this technique with you!

This is an interactive Livestream, so let me attach all the info needed for this exciting new tonebase LIVE format!
What do I need?
- We are going to use ZOOM for the interactive part of Livestream (the same piece of software that we have been using for the Virtual Hangouts). While it is not necessary to download the software, I would recommend it as it runs more stable as the browser version. In order to have the best audio quality, you can activate the option to Preserve Original Sound, here you find the documentation on how to activate that.
- It's best to prepare for that lesson to get the most out of it in the interactive part! So listen to some of our fantastic release on
How does this take place?
- Simply watch the Livestream at the time indicated in the Live Calender!
- At the end of the approx. 25-35min Livestream, I will share a ZOOM Link in the Chat. Click on that link, it will take you to our ZOOM Cohort Based Course
- In the Zoom Call, we will get into greater depth about challenging passages of that piece, we can discuss certain fingering possibilities TOGETHER and YOU can get a full masterclass experience if you decide to take part with audio and video (not necessarily needed, more on that below)!

Do I need to watch the Livestream before the interactive class?
While it is not mandatory to watch the Livestream, the link to the class will be only shared in the chat of the Livestream! As the contents of the Livestream are going to be interactively worked on and discussed, it's a great opportunity to get you up and running on that topic!
I want to be there and watch, but I don't feel comfortable taking part actively and share my audio and video. Can I still participate?
Of course! You can still enter the ZOOM class without audio and video. Though I highly recommend to see this Livestream more as university group lesson and - more importantly - a chance to have a meaningful interaction not only with me but with fellow tonebase users!
I want to participate with audio & video, but I don't like to be recorded.
The interactive class will not be recorded! In order to allow meaningful interaction to happen, we create this safe space, where you can fully immerse into a class. No single moment of the interactive class will be shared outside that virtual room! However, the Livestream prior to the interactive class will be recorded as usual and thus accessible after the Livestream happened.

Hi Martin!! I will do time for this interactive class!!!! as you know I am struggling with this . When I was young i played "Melodia Nocturna " ( I thought to play it in one of our concerts) , mainly in the first string, but it was not a nice tremolo, "gallopeado". Now I am , as you know, with Recuerdos de la Alhambra. I have begun to play also "El ultimo tremolo" de Barrios, just to enjoy the music...but only the first page. In my younger days I was playing also some flamenco pieces with tremolo...always not a nice tremolo but I was happy at that time...jajaja.

I found out only today, I hope to be able to watch,. Very good topic for an interactive session! Thank you, Nora, for mentioning it.
My thing with tremolo, other than the R hand issues, that Olli already mentioned:How to handle very big shifts (recuerdos B part, and in Barrios they occur often) The tremolo is meant to sustain the melody. The shift can create a noticeable gap. Too much glissando can be disturbing as well.
I played tremolo’s more as part of a piece, like a variation: Sakura, Ponce, Rigoletto Fantasía by Arcas or Tarrega?) Tansman’s scherzino (Cavatina part3) opens with a short but intriguing tremolo. I ‘struggle’ with a fluent alternation (overlapping) between thumb- and tremolo- part, in measures 4-8. I tend to lift or place the upper voice finger with the changing of the lower voice, on the beat, creating again a little gap. But I may be digging to deep ….

There are many guitarists with great tremolo, for example, John Williams, Pepe Romero, David Russell, Xuefei Yang, etc. My favorite is Liying Zhu. She is in Wupertal, near Düsseldorf.

Olli I met Liying Zhu when she was 16 at the Parkening Competition where she won third prize in the Youth category. She was the first prize winner of the 2015 Koblenz competition and earned her a concert at the Carnegie Hall in New York and San Francisco. I will not be able to attend.
I have played many tremolo compositions . It is good to practice on a daily basis.
Alfred Publications has an excellent Tarrega “Recuerdos”edition to learn tremolo applied to this piece .Scott Tennant. (Alfred Classical Guitar Masterwork Editions)
Also a MelBay publication MB20394, “The Art of Tremolo” by
Ioannis Anastassakis.
For a next challenge start to work on a piece with Two String tremolo;
”Floreando” by Alfonso Montes

in addition to the tremolo lessons on Tonebase by Scott Tenant & Bo Byun, I highly recommend David Russell's tremolo workshop for Tom Patterson's guitar program at the University of Arizona.

Great workshop with lots of tips and things to work on in future practice. I've struggled with tension in my right hand particularly when practicing tremolo so realising that every movement I make with the right hand can be improved dramatically is a bit of a revelation here... and I guess everything else I play.
Next stop this seemingly impossible song.... or more likely not.
