Week 3: Melodic Meanderings!

Welcome to the Main Thread for the third week of "Etude Extravaganza" practice challenge!

  1. Choose an etude from a composer that captures your interest. It could be a soothing Sor etude, a technical Giuliani masterpiece, a Carcassi finger exercise, a harmonically rich Brouwer composition, or a rhythmically challenging Villa-Lobos piece. You're encouraged to experiment with pieces from composers you're not accustomed to or push your boundaries with a technically demanding work. šŸŽ¼
  2. Commit to regular practice and share your journey with the community. Aim to practice daily and upload at least two videos per week to showcase your progress. This will not only aid in keeping you dedicated and motivated but also enables you to share your musical journey with our tonebase family. šŸŽ„
  3. Share your favorite etude or recording that epitomizes the concept of "Etude Extravaganza." Your submission will serve as inspiration for others and construct a vibrant repertoire of potential pieces for fellow members to explore. šŸŽ§

Marilyn Blodget Beautiful job! Just lovely! Iā€™m curious if you used the right hand to dampen or the left hand to lift the finger to get the muted F#.

Steve Pederson Thanks Steve.  I muted the f# with the right hand thumb, at the moment I played beat 1 of the following measure.

Here is a take of Sor Study (Segovia numbering) #12.  I haven't attempted playing this one in many years.  It's more challenging than I expected.

    • Barney Wow! This one is so difficult I have always avoided it. Great playing. I love the moment in the middle when it slows down, and then the opening comes back at full speed.

Eric Phillips Thanks Eric!  This one is a little tricky.  I love Sor, and you are the "Sor Master", so I really appreciate your comments, and value your insights.

    • Barney Donā€™t confuse playing a lot of Sor with being a ā€œSor masterā€. Like I said, I avoid most of his upper level pieces, especially fast ones like this. Your playing here is just outstanding.

Barney Wow!  Thatā€™s a challenging one!  Itā€™s nice to dust off our old friends.  Itā€™s coming along very nicely.  I studied all of these many many years ago with Turan Kamal, who was a private student of Segoviaā€™s.  I think heā€™s now an investment banker in Australia.  I remember how it feels under the fingersā€”difficult, but kind of fun.

Eric Phillips I always enjoy your playing of Sor's extensive repertoire.  You play the pieces so well, and often reminds me of certain ones I'm either not familiar with, or just forgot about...

Marilyn Blodget I agree Marilyn.   I remember studying these ages ago along with the Carcassi studies, etc with my first teacher.  He was a college history professor and student of Rey de la Torre. ( I was his only guitar student ).

Barney great playing Barney. Such beautiful sound does honour to maestro Sor. Itā€™s a great piece. You make  these thirds sound. so clean. Sometimes you arpeggiate the chords a bit much, overall a great performance

Blaise Laflamme Thanks Blaise!  I wanted to play those thirds at a faster tempo, but too tricky at this point to get there.

Barney Beautiful job on this Barney! Iā€™ve heard this piece before, but I didnā€™t know it was an etude. It seems much too beautiful and complex to be an etude, but I guess thatā€™s the genius of Sor!
