This Two Week Intensives will cover the essential techniques of staccato, portato, and legato for guitar players. Staccato involves playing notes in a short, detached manner, while legato involves playing notes smoothly and connected. Portato is a style that falls between staccato and legato, with slightly detached but still connected notes. The class will also delve into the development of left-hand technique that you need for proper articulation!
Sanel Redžić is one of the most promising and virtuoso guitarists of the younger
generation, who has created an important name on the international scene, having a wide
repertoire from baroque to modern music.
Sanel currently teaches at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Weimar and at
the University of Erfurt in Germany. He is also artistic director and founder of Tuzla Guitar
Week in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Repertoire:
- Scales (major with parallel melodic minor scares)
- Leo Brouwer - Etude Nr. 1
- Agustin Barrios - Mangore - 3rd movement of La Catedral
- Fernando Sor - Etude Op. 35, No. 22 (Segovia No. 5)
- Any other example by participants

Assignment:
- Submit a video containing either one or several of the exercises. For example, start with a simple C major scale playing once as legato as possible, repeat with portamento and then one last time with staccato. Please tell us what articulation you were aiming for!
- Feel free to apply the learnings to either Brouwer Etude no.1 or your own repertoire!
Feel free to ask questions in a written reply and/or add them to your video!
Assignment Week 2:
- Read and play through the piece provided by Sanel and play the basses staccato and the upper voices legato!

In stacc. the notes could be and should be played the same way. Now there are few that are longer and few that are shorter. That would be my suggestion right now. -

Hi, this is Eric. I just watched the videos, and Sanel is very correct about how articulation is not high on the list of things I consider when playing. I only had formal studies for a few years (more than thirty years ago now), and I don’t remember ever being taught about articulation. So, this is obviously a huge area of needed growth for me. I hope this TWI will help get me started in the right direction.

unfortunately we guitarists don't think so much about the articulations. Especially in the beginning, when we are starting to learn the instrument.

Yes very good points made!
In my case I find it very hard to control and stop/mute, particularly unwanted bass strings resonances. Will try this exercises more consciously from now on and will incorporate in my repertoire more carefully.

Sanel Redzic and martin , I found very interesting the comment about how the Barroque music requires using different articulations for melody and base line.
I was wondering if you could share an example, i.e. first 8 bars of the Bourree in Em BWV 996. Of course, if you think this is out of topic I will fully undestand.

David Gimenez Very good. Sometimes when doing stacc. your notes are a bit too long so it seems to me that you are mixing staccato and portato.

I assumed that I should come back with p to the string before playing next note only in stacc as I was relying only on the left hand for the portato. Thinking in perspective, you're absolutelly right as using p is the only way to stop the string i.e. when you are playing an open one.
