Group 2

This Two Week Intensives will cover the essential techniques of staccato, portato, and legato for guitar players. Staccato involves playing notes in a short, detached manner, while legato involves playing notes smoothly and connected. Portato is a style that falls between staccato and legato, with slightly detached but still connected notes. The class will also delve into the development of left-hand technique that you need for proper articulation!

Sanel Redžić is one of the most promising and virtuoso guitarists of the younger
generation, who has created an important name on the international scene, having a wide
repertoire from baroque to modern music.

Sanel currently teaches at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Weimar and at
the University of Erfurt in Germany. He is also artistic director and founder of Tuzla Guitar
Week in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Repertoire:

  •  Scales (major with parallel melodic minor scares)
  • Leo Brouwer - Etude Nr. 1
  • Agustin Barrios - Mangore - 3rd movement of La Catedral
  • Fernando Sor - Etude Op. 35, No. 22 (Segovia No. 5)
  • Any other example by participants

Assignment Videos

I compiled a playlist with 5 Videos! More Videos will come :)

  • Video 1: Intro
  • Video 2: C Major scale with i-m
  • Video 3: C Major scale with p
  • Video 4: Arpeggios
  • Video 5: Brouwer no.1

Assignment:

  • Submit a video containing either one or several of the exercises. For example, start with a simple C major scale playing once as legato as possible, repeat with portamento and then one last time with staccato. Please tell us what articulation you were aiming for!
  • Feel free to apply the learnings to either Brouwer Etude no.1 or your own  repertoire!

Feel free to ask questions in a written reply and/or add them to your video!

Assignment Week 2:

  • Read and play through the piece provided by Sanel and play the basses staccato and the upper voices legato!

    • David Gimenez Hi, I did not see any other way to upload the video. I am quite a little bit embarrassed for my level. But well, I jumped.

    • Thank you Javier Elizondo

In stacc. the notes could be and should be played the same way. Now there are few that are longer and few that are shorter. That would be my suggestion right now.

Hi everyone, Derek here. I'm looking forward to this and hoping that I can improve my articulation - to actually play like I think I'm playing! I'd like to apply it to La Catedral and Sor's Opus 35 no 22 plus my own pieces such as Sor's Andante Largo Opus 5 no 5

    • Derek Looking forward hearing some parts from Barrios-Mangore, Sor and your music.

  • Hello! I'm Walter. My main goal is to play more musically. I think I play to square, without good phrasing. I really want to improve that! :)

  • Hi, this is Eric. I just watched the videos, and Sanel is very correct about how articulation is not high on the list of things I consider when playing. I only had formal studies for a few years (more than thirty years ago now), and I don’t remember ever being taught about articulation. So, this is obviously a huge area of needed growth for me. I hope this TWI will help get me started in the right direction.

    • Good that you say it Eric Phillips

unfortunately we guitarists don't think so much about the articulations. Especially in the beginning, when we are starting to learn the instrument.

Articulation interests me. Articulation remains a challenge when playing legato, portamento, and staccato, so I look forward to sharing my video for feedback.

  • Hello everyone !

Just excited to join this team and make the most of the opportunity of learning together and improve all these details that I very often leave aside. I hope that thanks to this course I'll win in consciousness about how important these details they are and will draw a path for future improvements !

    Yes very good points made!

In my case I find it very hard to control and stop/mute, particularly unwanted bass strings resonances. Will try this exercises more consciously from now on and will incorporate in my repertoire more carefully.
    Regards to all,

    Rene

    Hi Everyone,

My goal is to master articulation, but more specifically, to improve my legato.

Playing legato on guitar is the most difficult things. Keep on working!

  • Hi Mates !!

Here you can find my first exercise as requested in Video 2.

Plenty of room to improve but I preferred to share it in time with mistakes and do not miss the chance to get your feedback.

Soon I'll share  Exercise as requested in video 3. Same but using p instead of im.

In order to avoid to force you to download files, find the exercise in this youtube link https://youtu.be/ZANDwE9DVWg

Sanel Redzic and martin , I found very interesting the comment about how the Barroque music requires using different articulations for melody and base line.

I was wondering if you could share an example, i.e. first 8 bars of the Bourree in Em BWV 996. Of course, if you think this is out of topic I will fully undestand.

    Thank you  all !

    Regards

    • David Gimenez Very good. Sometimes when doing stacc. your notes are a bit too long so it seems to me that you are mixing staccato and portato.

I will make Bourre BWV 996 later and will share it here with you.

    • David Gimenez Super. Don't forget when doing stacc. or portato to come always back with the p to the string before playing the next note.

    • Thank you Sanel Redzic

I assumed that I should come back with p to the string before playing next note only in stacc as I was relying only on the left hand for the portato. Thinking in perspective, you're absolutelly right as using p is the only way to stop the string i.e. when you are playing an open one.

      Thank you again. !
