🎯 The Etude Challenge: Study Pieces, Serious Progress - Week 6

Attention tonebuddies! It's time to embrace the music that was literally designed to make you a better guitarist. Welcome to The Etude Challenge — four weeks dedicated to the art of the etude!

Etudes occupy a unique place in the classical guitar repertoire. They're technical workouts disguised as beautiful music — pieces that sharpen your skills while rewarding you with something genuinely worth performing. From the elegant simplicity of Carcassi and Sor to the rhythmic brilliance of Brouwer's Etudes Simples, the virtuosic fire of Villa-Lobos's 12 Études, and everything in between — there's an etude out there for every player at every level.

This challenge is your chance to pick one (or more!), commit to it, and share your journey with the community.

🎯 Whether you choose to:

  • Tackle a classic — Sor Op. 35, Carcassi Op. 60, Giuliani Op. 48
  • Go for something bold — Villa-Lobos, Barrios, or Coste
  • Explore the modern side — Brouwer, Carlevaro, or Bogdanovic
  • Revisit an old friend — Polish a piece you learned before and bring it to a new level

…this is your moment to dig in and grow. This challenge is open to all levels — whether you're working through your very first Sor etude or preparing a Villa-Lobos for the stage, you belong here.

📅 Challenge Dates

Start: February 23

End: April 17

💡 How to Participate

  1. Pick your etude – Choose one that excites you and challenges you. Not sure where to start? Ask the community for suggestions!
  2. Share your goal – Tell us what you're working on and what you want to achieve (clean run-through, memorization, performance tempo, etc.)
  3. Post your progress – Upload short clips, practice notes, or reflections as you go. We want to see the process, not just the polish.
  4. Engage – Listen to what others are working on, leave encouragement, and trade practice tips!

Hello tonebase buddies. I've been away for a bit with some unavoidable life things. Here is my latest rendition of Sor's Opus 6 #11. There are still some things I'm not quite happy with but all in due time. If it's allowed to add another video I might try it on my normal sized (for me 630 scale) guitar. My hand therapy has been very helpful but I also don't want to overdo it. One huge improvement though is in the 3rd section (major) of the piece I can play the stretch in measures 60 and 68 as they are typically played. That makes me very happy. I look forward to getting caught up and listening to everyone's work in this challenge.

Thank you, David. I appreciate that. I’m glad you like the guitar. I really recommend it if you can get your hands on one. It’s delightful to play. It’s a Wolfgang Jellinghaus Torres 77. You can sometimes find them from The Guitar Salon in the U.S. or Siccas in Europe. The price is typically 2500€. Having said that, I couldn’t find one so I tracked down the luthier workshop in China. They had one almost finished so I snagged it for 1500€ including taxes and shipping. If you want to do the same you can email [email protected]

I’d love to know if you end up getting one!

Beautiful performance Debbie!  I'm very happy the hand therapy along with this great smaller scale guitar is helping you.  Your balance of legato melody and accompaniment is spot on.

I enjoyed this very much.  Keep up the great work!

I use a special glove for my left hand for my LH thumb injury, which has helped..  Has the therapist suggested anything like that for when you are practicing? ( it depends on your particular problem).

thank you Barney. I appreciate that. It wasn’t too bad I guess apart from the obvious mess ups 😂 But now it’s at a level where I can keep working on the details. I didn’t know you had a LH thumb injury. I’m sorry to hear that because I know how frustrating it can be.  I’m glad you have a workable solution. I sometimes use K-tape to support the LH ring finger but I haven’t needed to use it since starting therapy. I have muscle atrophy from ulnar nerve damage so some stretches are impossible. I can pretty much tell if a piece is going to work or not by running through it once. For example, I recently wanted to start Barrios Estudio 6 but I couldn’t manage the barre chord section because of the extensions. So some repertoire I just have to wave at and say, “maybe next life!”

This is beautiful, Debbie. I always found this piece to be a wolf in sheep's clothing. It has such a gentle flow but is much more difficult to play than it sounds. You have done a wonderful job on it. The guitar sounds really nice as well.

Beautiful Debbie, your sound and playing on this instrument is just perfect, I like it very much! This is indeed one of my favorite Sor study, bravo! 👌💪

Since you're in Canada, I went to the Grand Salon de Guitare in Montreal a few months ago with a friend he tried a few of them. If you're interested in such guitar I suggest you to contact Paul, the store owner, he's a nice guy, and it'd be easy to ship between provinces and you won't have any hidden fees. As an example, click here!

Thanks, Debbie! Great idea to go directly to the manufacturer! For the moment, I'll an eye open for one in the used guitar market here in Toronto - over the years I've come across some amazing finds.

Thanks Blaise. I'll probably give it one more go and see if I can focus better and avoid the mistakes that bother me.

Thanks Blaise! For the moment the guitar is simply one of many on my 'wish list'. Another item on my 'wish list' is having something like the 'Grand Salon' here in Toronto. It's curious - English Canada has produced a number of well known guitarists, but we have nothing approaching the 'guitar culture' that you have in Quebec. I'm jealous!

I joined here last week. I hope to be able to post Brouwer Study 6 by deadline. I want to achieve more legato and tone. I am working on my right hand which has always been a challenge. I worked on the Brouwer over a few months and have recognized the chord structure and blocked the chords. That pattern is simple but requires planting right hand and relazation. Two things I am working on.

Welcome Robert, feel free to post anything at any point, people here mostly share their progress and discuss with others than share perfect renditions!

Gilardino Study #31 Theme and Variations 1,2,3

So I finally got a marginally acceptable recording thru variation 3 (I repeated variation 2 as the the 1st time thru was so bad). Variation 3 has been a real challenge for me. It has some wide stretches in fairly quick movements along with some moderately tricky RH fingering.  The recording is a little too loud but at least it isn't clipping.

The last 3 variations are a bit easier (I think - at least I can read thru them). I willl continue to work on the first variations as I add the final ones. I think I have time to get them all done. Whether there is time for me to actually record them is another matter altogether. 🤔

Thanks for sharing your progress on it Jack, it starts to make more sense listening to the theme with a few variations, I very like this music and what you're doing!

Wow - that looks like a real workout for the left hand! You're really handling it well - as Blaise said, the 'sense' of the music is becoming quite apparent now.

Coming along very nicely and I like how they fit together.  It also grows on you the more you listen to it. Looking forward to hearing more when I get back to the States, of course, we may decide to stay in Euope if things continue to deteriorate in the US.

Traditional - "Jesus, Won't You Come By and By"

This is from a set of progressive studies called 14 Études on the Music of Black Americans by Thomas Flippin, which he wrote based on old spirituals and work songs.

Awesome, Steve! I had heard of these pieces, but never heard any of them. Did you get the music through his website?

That is really great. Steve. I have not heard of them before. Thanks for sharing this, I will have to check them out.

BTW I just checked them out on YT. Here is a link to a guitarist (Damian Goggans,) who sings each song before playing the arrangement.
