December 21st Update: We will run this workshop on December 28th, thanks to all of you for your understanding! 🧙‍♂️

December 20th Update:  I've been sick for the last couple of days, so I won't be able to host this workshop. I promise to deliver this piece of left hand craziness as soon as I am back on track!

After covering basic techniques for the right hand in my last workshop, we will dive deeeeep into the mysteries of the left hand with this challenging etude by Heitor Villa-Lobos! 💪🧙‍♂️

  • Any particular area you would like me to focus on?

Forum questions will be answered first!

"Effortless slurs, elegant change of position, flawless accuracy. That is what we are striving for when practicing guitar. The third Etude by Villa-Lobos is a wonderful vessel that will guide us through the mysteries of the left hand. With this piece, we will explore a multitude of facets of left hand technique and will look at different practice exercices that will prepare our hand not only for this challenging etude, but for every movement your left hand will execute. Grab your guitars and get ready for your left hand workout!"

  • What is your opinion and approach to playing the repeated measures, in this and also in studies 1 and 2? I know that the original manuscript did not include them. In studies 1 and 2, I find it technically more challenging to omit them. However in this study, it seems that each approach (including vs. omitting the repeats) has its own nuances - there are skills to be learned in repeating the same bar, and then other complications in switching more quickly to the next hand position. Is one a 'better' approach than the other?

  • How to control the 'pull-off' part of the slurs? Mine often sound too loud relative to the hammer-on. Any tips on smoothing it out, almost de-accentuating it?

Sarah Pollack Hi Sarah, hope you enjoyed the live stream and that I answered your questions! 🧙‍♂️

    • martin it was amazing to get so much personal attention to whatever questions or comments I had! Yes of course you answered everything and even went a bit further. Thanks again for the truly thorough lesson! I just joined Tonebase a few weeks ago and still learning my way around. The livestreams are great! I studied for several years in person with Simon Powis who runs Classical Guitar Corner. I had to stop due to my work situation but really miss the lessons and trying not to lose sight of the good habits that were learned. My project for the last year and a half or so has been to learn everything in that Villa Lobos book! Getting there slowly, 3 more Etudes and 2 more preludes to go 😁😁😁

      Have a wonderful new year!

Sarah Pollack Awesome, I am very happy to hear that! Rocking through that Villa-Lobos-Book is quite an achievement, congratulations to you! I intended to dive a little bit deeper into choros as well, I actually never played anything from Villa-Lobos except the etudes and one or two preludes.

And the concerto, haha. When Mircea and me started to study in Düsseldorf, our guitar department organized a competition where the concerto was an obligatory piece and - of course - all of the students should take part in that competition, but we only had about 2 weeks to prepare the concerto. Crazy times!

Sarah Pollack I agree, Sarah - the personal feedback we get here on tonebase is incredible. It's almost like having private lessons. There's a real sense of 'community' here too. The one 'drawback' is there's so much material on offer, it's hard to keep up!

David Krupka well, I have bad news for you - we are planning to increase the amount of material soon, mwahaha 😈

Just kidding, David - the extra material we are going to be providing will target different types of users, particularly beginners and people that have not been able to keep up with the level required for previous livestreams and challenges "of the Gulli sort". At some point, it will become impossible to take part in everything, but hopefully every type of fellow community member will have something interesting for their own level.

I'm happy to hear you've been enjoying our Live and Community activities, so glad you're having fun 😁 see you around!

Hi Martin; you requested info on vimeo problems:

    I used chrome

I had one glitch early but I believe it was at my end (other web sites inaccessible)

"Live stream offline" message appeared at 1:15:08. I waited a few minutes then reloaded.

Video and audio hung at 2:00:53, reload worked.

In the past I had to reload every few minutes and sometimes I had to reload twice in succession

    Peter

PS. I got a lot out of the workshop too:)
