Blaise's Practice Diary - Dyens's Saudade No 3
Requested by Eric Phillips our lead challenger for a more contemporary piece and because it's next in my list of work to learn and perform, in the next weeks I'll be working on Saudade No 3 by Roland Dyens.

Well, you certainly are giving yourself a really big challenge to get those two iconic pieces ready in a month. If you pull this off, you will be the undisputed king of challenges! (I actually think you already are and this would just solidify your reign.)

I'm just an humble player who tries to do more music in his life... also like the other piece I've already read through it in the past so I'm not starting from scratch... but... no one says they'll be ready in a month 😂... at least I'll have committed myself to finally work on both of them! 💪

Blaise Laflamme Yes, I really like doing the practice diary, because it gives me more motivation to actually continue working on a piece to completion. I can't tell you how many pieces I have started working on, but stopped for a whole variety of reasons (too difficult, not enough time, moving on to another piece too early, etc.). I hope having the diary as a permanent feature will help me stop that bad habit.

Hey Blaise-- This is such an amazing piece by Dyens. I've never played any of his music, but just listened to it on a youtube video. , and Wow! You certainly have the chops and musicianship to play this very well, and I really look forward to your playing it. (It will probably be the highlight of the whole concert!)

There is a lot of interesting and odd techniques called upon for this song. Some dissonant sections that are also kind of random and improvisational. I feel the same way about the Brouwer El Decameron Negro. So I edit them down to the core sections I like and drop the rest.

Hey Blaise, I feel like such a Ludite. I can't find your recording of this but there are a lot of others commenting on it. Can you direct to your recording?
