Instantly hailed as a masterpiece upon their first publication in 1953, the “12 Etudes” by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos have continued to inspire shock and awe to this day, often striking fear into the hearts of anyone who dreams of playing them. Are they really that hard? Let us welcome back Belgian guitar virtuoso Jan Depreter, who stands internationally accused of recording the best Villa-Lobos Complete Recordings in a decade, and explore his unique step-by-step insights and recommendations in attacking the most famous batch of studies ever written for the guitar.
I am very excited to talk with Jan about these pieces that have been so important for my personal development (and I had one of the worst concert experiences playing the first etude on stage, not a single bar worked without a mistage ) ! Let's dive into the twelve Etudes by Villa-Lobos!
- Have you already played an Etude by Villa-Lobos?
- Are you struggling with a specific one?
- Should one attempt to learn all of them?
Let me know!

I've tried to play 1,8 and 11. I did no 8 reasonably well (many years ago), no 11 has some tricky stretches which I struggled with. For number one last year I practiced the right hand pattern for months (as per Mircea's technique exercises) then tried to play the whole piece but there are a couple of chord changes that I could never really achieve!
Looking forward to this live stream, hopefully will gain some valuable insights.

I played several of the etudes (1, 2, 5, 6, 8), they are so great, technically and musically. I think it’s worth tasting all of them, but conquering all 12 is not a must - for most of us (understatement). I’m tackling 11 again, played it once in concert, but now struggle with the octaves and shifts.
Very much looking forward to this livestream
