using footstool with guitar support

Was watching the GFA and notice some players uses additional footstool on top of guitar support. I remember during one of the live stream Bill Kanengiser mentioned using it too together with his sagework.

Wonder if anyone does that too?

  • don  I've seen that too and what I suspect is that the support is settled for their usual position with a normal chair and then at a contest/concert where you don't have other choices than a piano bench, which is also higher from the ground, they use a footstool to fill the gap. At least that's what I would do, other than that I don't see the point to use both except adding a point of instability 😅

      Blaise Laflamme That makes sense about the GFA. Let me go search for that live stream of Bill Kanengiser too, I can't remember what he said.

      edit: found it. it is the live stream titled Biomechanics for guitarist with Bill Kanengiser. At the 37min mark. He makes his own footstool to use to sagework support. But did say is personal preference.

    • don hmmm... can you post the video link? For sure at the end of the day everything is personal preference and I'm sure Bill Kanengiser knows what he's doing, but in my opinion if you use a footstool you break one of the main benefits of the Sagework support (and similar ones) to have both feet on the floor and prevent hip problems. It's also possible the support is not long enough for him to get the position he's looking for? I personally have to use the larger one and for what I can see he's taller than me 😅

      It is quite an interesting live stream.

    • don thanks don! so it seems that he's not comfortable having both feet flat on the floor then he crafted his own one that is pretty low to make him more comfortable!

      Blaise Laflamme seems like it is just arbitrary and I thought I stumble onto some new trend.. :-)

      but that live stream has a lot of good information.

    • don try it... who knows... possible you'll find a more comfortable position for yourself and start a new trend!

  • I do it. I got the "Ultimate Guitar Chair" but despite measuring my leg length as they asked, I must've got the wrong height anyways because it's just about 2-3" too tall. I'm 6'4 but I guess I did something wrong. In any event, I decided to use my "Embracing Guitar" guitar support (similar to a GuitarLift--the plexiglass board with suction cups) with the chair and it then required me to use my footstool on the lowest setting.

      Stephen Darrell Oliver thanks! I tried using a book with my sagework and it feels surprisingly comfortable.

    • don the Sagework is not long enough at full length, are you using the larger one?

      Blaise Laflamme I actually just changed to a large one from the standard. It is not fully extended but it is the maximum it can go already.

    • don hmm... ok... I'm surprised with a large one it's not long enough, here's mine not fully extended...

      Blaise Laflamme mine is about the same as yours but it becomes quite unstable if I try to extend it farther, it becomes very hard to lock it in place. .
