Hi all, I found this exercise quite hard, especially from a cold start. And recording anything I play brings out the nerves. But here's my first attempt.

    • Leon Did you intend your video to be "Private?" I wanted to see and hear your version but the link will not open. Displays a "This video is private" message.

    • Leon looks good but I would suggest you to try to reduce the movements in your right hand wrest. It is at the moment jumping a bit. It is not an easy thing to correct but you should think about it.

Hi Neil, forgive the rookie error. Still coming to terms with youtube uploads. I've changed the setting so please let me know if this one works. Thanks.

    • Leon Yes, this one does play nicely. It is a hard exercise,  especially as you approach the 12th fret.  It helps to try to solidify the RH pattern at lower positions before venturing higher.  You got all the way through at your selected tempo without derailing. That's an accomplishment in itself.

Agree with your remark about recording.  Sometimes the mic can be more intimidating than a live audience .

    Hello to all,
I just want to mention that I follow this group, watching and reading and also practicing (after 1+ year(s) my arm and shoulder are now better, almost recovered and good most of the time, allowing me to be more active than in all the past months with respect to guitar practicing/playing, step by step minutewise, more and more from week to week), but currently I have no equipment for proper recording, and therefore I cannot submit a video at the moment. The course is great, as all the stuff here. Thanks again, and thanks a lot!

Neil Macmillan Hi Neil, thanks for your message. No, it was neither an accident or something like that nor an injury. I had the similar symptoms a few years ago with the left shoulder, most probably a kind of predisposition in the complex shoulder and/or "tear and wear"... After successful surgery by a specialist the shoulder turned into a "frozen shoulder". "2-3 years" said the doctor. More or less exactly after 2.5 years it was fine more or less over night (similar to how it was suddenly there, the heavy pain). I was not able to play guitar for a longer time. And then and now the right shoulder had same symptoms, a mixture of impingement, frozen shoulder etc. I am trying to recover by physical exercises etc., the last option would be a surgery, but currently I am doing better and better, so I am going to be happy, in particular with being able to play and practice guitar more and more each week (I am playing since more than 45 years now, so it is a very important part of my life).
To you and all the others: have fun here!

    Hi all,

I wanted to get a version of the CMaj/Amin scales posted for Sanel to comment.

But I realised why I don't like recording myself.

My left hand fingers are miles from the fretboard. Argh!

I guess that's why we're doing these workshops, right?

    • Leon Thanks for posting. Fingers are not *miles* from the fretboard but we could probably all work on improving efficiency of LH and RH fingering.

    • Leon it is not that bad with the left hand. You could and you should work on the reducing of movements in the left hand but as I said before, you should also think of reducing the movements (jumps) in the right hand as well.

SANEL REDŽIĆ Thanks Sanel. Recording oneself really does highlight the issues to work on.

    • Definitely Leon ! That's why I love to record myself as well. It helps me to understand what really happens when I play. Sometimes it sounds much different as what I think that happens when I play.

  • Hello Sanel,

In the your video 3, in addition to stopping the bass note, do we also need to stop all the other notes and not let them ring on?   I can do the bass stopping in line with Rick Lord's posted score with bass having a duration of 1/8 note.   In the Carlevaro book, there is no note stopping in the notation.  Can you clarify?

I am currently practising stopping all notes, I find it difficult to play this smoothly.

    Thank you.

    • Hi Vincent Tam ,

I would work on stoping the basses only. The other notes should ring. But to be honest, it is an extra task to do, once you can play it properly and it is not an easy task to do. I am not a big fan of the big noises coming from the unnecessary notes in the bass so that is one reason why to do this. Another one is that we have to do it in the music that we play as we sometimes have so many open strings that we should control, especially in the music by Giuliani, Sor or Bach.

  • Here is video . I'm playing too slow. I did not "mute" the base strings because I haver not had that much practice in mutting. The pieces I have been studying do not call for the "mutting". I will, learn this technique.

    • peter hancock Practising slowly is fine. You can always increase the tempo once you establish the RH pattern, including the muting, for the arpeggio. Thanks for posting.

    • Great peter hancock ! You are having always the break when changing the position, so I would suggest you to play first the bass (open 6th string) and in the same time to change the position. Than you can try to be more on time.

  • Hi I have noticed that Youtube has added all these sex things off to the side of the video I just sent to you for TWI.. I apologies for those items. I just don't  know why or how they got there or how to erase them.  Sorry.

    Peter.

I am posting 3 videos of the exercises that Sanel has given us to work on.

Video 1 is the speed preparation exercise. I did the the first pair (4 notes / 3 notes) in Apoyando and the next pair in Tirando.  My hand is somewhat unstable, especially in the lower strings. It has gotten better but still a ways to go.

Video 2 is the Carlevaro Arpeggios at 70 bpm. Again my right hand feels unstable, especially as I proceed. This is probably a matter of concentration. My mind begins to wander and I stumble a few (many) times.

A question I have here for Sanel is should we be planting the RH fingers at the beginning of each pattern? I haven't tried that yet because I am having enough trouble focussing on the metronome, the RH pattern and damping the bass on the 'I' finger beat 3 of the pattern.

Video 3 is the C major / A minor scales at 70 bpm. I practice these starting at 60 bpm and follow the pattern Sanel gave us - 1 x quarter note, 2 x 8th notes and 4 x 16th notes. Actually I also add 3 x 8th triplets between 2 and 4. Here I just play 1 time thru at 16th notes at 70 bpm the first in apoyan do and the second in tirando.

I need more work on the descending jumps as they can be a bit disconnected and inaccurate.

  • i ran out of time. I didm practice the 16 notes but every time I make a mistake I had to start over. I was going to do a separate video but the time is gone.  I will practice this. My stage fright gets in the way.
