Demystifying Concierto de Aranjuez: Tips and Fingerings (Mar 26) Questions / Suggestions

Alright, everyone, many of you have been requesting it - especially this week - therefore, it's finally time to do it! 😎

Great masterpiece of guitar & orchestra repertoire: here we go!

All of us can learn things that apply to our current level of musical and technical proficiency from all music, even that which may initially appear above our current level.

As I so often say in my livestreams, the essence of good technique and musicianship is not to be able to do superhuman things, but to simplify everything down to the point where it becomes trivial.

And in Concierto de Aranjuez, there are quite a few small things that can make our life so much easier (and the music so much more straightforward!) that it is absolutely worth going over them. So let's do it!

We are going to be looking at both musical and technical aspects, and short selections from all three movements.

If you'd like me to concentrate on a particular section or movement, let me know right here in the thread!

We are going to be using this thread to gather suggestions and questions!

  • What questions do you have on this topic?
  • Any particular area you would like us to focus on?

Performing Rodrigo's masterpiece for guitar and orchestra can seem like an impossible task. However, with the help of a few intelligent musical choices and fingerings, it can become easier than you might think. Join tonebase instructor Mircea Gogoncea for this livestream, in which he will share some of the most useful and musically relevant conclusions from his own vast performance experience of this work.

Hi Mircea,  I will not be available to watch this one live (will watch later), but would kindly address questions on 4 separate sections. Please see attachment with green brackets for each section referenced below:

    1. Mvt 1: opening Rasgueados What is best Right hand fingering? (also can you tell from Angel Romero's online performance what his RH is doing?)

    2. Mvt2:  The Rasgueados high up on neck at fret XI.  How to handle right and left hands so they are clear and powerful.

    3. Mvt3: 16th note 4 note figures -what and how to execute right hand fingering so the sound is continuous and flowing evenly.

    4. Mvt3:  Similar question to 3 above regarding RH fingering for best continuous sound.

I look forward to watching this session later and your suggestions for these sections.  Thanks!

    Best,

    Barney

Here are the links to  a young Angel Romero playing it live (in case any you you haven't seen these)

    Mvt 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPAUL-sP09o

    Mvt 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0tY8REYdYE

    Mvt 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TIL60UYNmk

Angel's masterful fiery playing of this piece has always been my personal favorite from way back, and still now.

(didn't his Rodriguez guitar sound great?  We can understand why the Romeros family played on Rodriguez guitars for many years...)

    Enjoy!

In the 2nd mvt, the long cross-string trill on 4th & 5th bass string (between notes  "d" and "d flat"), is there a trick to getting this trill up to speed?  I have no problem with the previous one (on note"e")using regular slurs.  Thanks1

Hi Mircea I doubt that I will ever play this piece (especially with an orchestra) I do have the score (for guitar and piano reduction)  I just wonder if there are any midi files for the orchestral (or piano reduction) parts available that you would recommend. I could make my own but it's a lot of work. It would be interesting to try out at least a part of this wonderful piece.

  • sim eu tenho mas tocar  aobra com midi não é a mesma coisa .....na obra o solista és tu e a orquestra deve seguir-te com o midi é precisamente o contrario

I watched the recorded livestream, which was awesome!  Thank you so much for answering the questions I presented in the forum!

Since this piece has so much meaty material in each of the movements, it would be great to do 3 additional livestreams (one for each movement), which as you know has many technical issues as well as requiring sound musical direction and considerations.

Of course this is my opinion and only makes sense only if enough people feel they could benefit.

This is a great piece, and I can never get sick of it, no matter how many times I've seen/heard it.

    Hi Mircea,

For the 16th note figures in questions 3 &4 that you suggested using AMI tremolo;  are you using Free stroke tremolo or Rest stroke tremolo?  It looks like free stroke, but wanted to confirm because of the volume needed to be produced.  Thanks!

Barney I use apoyando tremolo, however, a large portion of the passage takes place on the 6th string, where AMI apoyando can only be implied, rather than executed. Hope this helps!

It would be great for you to do a live stream  separately for each of the three movements.  I hope others show interest in this great work.  You did such a fantastic job with this one, I'm sure the advanced players would certainly benefit from your experience and advice for this piece.  Thanks Mircea!!!

    Hi there Mircea

Are your annotated versions of the second and third movement perhaps available? Thanks.
