Week 2: Technique Tango!
Welcome to the Main Thread for the second week of "Etude Extravaganza" practice challenge!
- Choose an etude from a composer that captures your interest. It could be a soothing Sor etude, a technical Giuliani masterpiece, a Carcassi finger exercise, a harmonically rich Brouwer composition, or a rhythmically challenging Villa-Lobos piece. You're encouraged to experiment with pieces from composers you're not accustomed to or push your boundaries with a technically demanding work.
- Commit to regular practice and share your journey with the community. Aim to practice daily and upload at least two videos per week to showcase your progress. This will not only aid in keeping you dedicated and motivated but also enables you to share your musical journey with our tonebase family.
- Share your favorite etude or recording that epitomizes the concept of "Etude Extravaganza." Your submission will serve as inspiration for others and construct a vibrant repertoire of potential pieces for fellow members to explore.

Microestudios No.12 - Abel Carlevaro
I am working on the second half of Carlevaro's Microestudios recently, but they're much more challenging than the first half, both in terms of musically and technically. I'd like to share No.12 this time - it's a study that focuses on 1 and 4 left-hand movements. I love the sound of this piece and it's a very fun piece to play.

Wai Elimination of string noise may be a bridge too far, but reducing string noise is achievable. Keep up the great work you are doing. I am very impressed!

Carulli - More Selections from Op 333
Okay, are you ready for more than nine minutes of Ferdinando Carulli? I had so much fun playing the first three pieces in this opus that I decided to play a bunch more today. The last one (number 17) is definitely my favorite. Enjoy!

I didn't have as much time to practice so I spent more time to work on section 2. Need to work on releasing some LH tension when I start section 3.

don very nice. You’re really getting there Don. I love this study. You’re doing a great job with this. I heard it first from Gabriel Bianco but there many version.s . I love this piece a lot. It’s great to discover such different interpretations.

joosje Thanks! The first time I heard of that piece was that exact video by Gabriel Bianco!Tariq Harb's version was pretty good too. The second video sounds great! Interestingly, Xue Fei Yang started using 7 strings guitar in her new album and it sounds great.

Wai thank you Wai. I just discovered him too, apparently it was a recent discovery (last 40-50 years) of Regondi's music. Was revised and edited by Matanya Ophee.

Been a bit busy this month so have not been able to record anything new, but hopefully will do so in weeks three and four of the challenge. In any case, here is a short little study by Carlevaro from his Cuaderno No. 3 which I recorded at the end of March. The challenge of this study is to make the shifts of the left hand with as little string noise as possible.

joosje Thanks. It is a nice study and is part of my daily routine. It really helps in building the muscle memory needed to execute clean shifts (traslados por salto).

Eric Phillips Thanks for noticing the absence of string squeaks. It is a cool sounding study and really works out the left-hand shifts.

Wai Wai Thanks, Wai. It is indeed a good study to work on for practicing clean shifts. The key is a very subtle use of the left arm to lift off the strings and not the fingers alone. In my humble opinion those string squeaks need not be a fact of life for us guitarists but with a concerted effort they can be reduced and even eliminated.
