Week 5: The Guitar Awakens

Hello tonebuddies! 🎶

A long time ago, in a practice room far, far away... you picked up a piece. You were excited. You cracked it open, worked through the first page, maybe the second — and then something happened. Life struck back. A new piece caught your eye. The fingering felt impossible. The score quietly migrated to the bottom of a stack where it's been sitting ever since. 🎸

This May, we're bringing back the Unfinished Business Challenge — and we're kicking things off on May the 4th, because what better day to summon the Force and finally finish what you started? Every guitarist has an abandoned piece (or three). This is your chance to rescue one from the Sarlacc pit of your music folder and bring it home.

This challenge is open to all levels. Whether you left off at bar 8 or bar 80, whether it's a Bach fugue or a beginner study that got away — if there's a piece waiting for its return, it belongs here.

🌟 The Challenge

Revisit a composition you started but never finished — and this time, see it through. It might be:

  • 🎯 A piece you abandoned because it felt too hard
  • 🎯 Something you got halfway through before a new obsession took over
  • 🎯 A passage or section you never quite nailed
  • 🎯 A piece you learned years ago but never polished or performed

Share the story of why it got left behind and what it means to finally complete it. That's half the magic of this challenge.

📅 Challenge Dates

Start: May 4
End: June 12
Watch Party: June 12

🎥 How to Participate

  1. Pick your piece – Choose the piece (or section) that's been haunting you. The one you've been avoiding. That's the one.
  2. Share your goal – Post in the forum thread and tell us what you're finishing and why it got abandoned in the first place.
  3. Post your progress – Share updates along the way — rough takes, slow-tempo run-throughs, the gnarly passage you finally cracked.
  4. Engage with your fellow rebels – Cheer each other on, leave constructive feedback, and celebrate every piece that makes it across the finish line.

Bonus points: Share a recording of your favorite performance of the piece you're revisiting — the version that first made you fall in love with it.

🎬 Watch Party — June 12

The Watch Party on June 12 will feature recorded submissions from everyone who completed their Unfinished Business. Make sure to submit your final performance videos so we can celebrate your finished piece together! 🎉

💡 Need a Little Help from a Jedi Master?

Antonio Lauro, Vals 2 - Andreina

I'm trying to add some variety in the dynamics and tone colors in the different sections, but it's not always coming through, especially when I record. I'm finally realizing why it would have been much better to start thinking about these interpretive choices "from the beginning, the first reading, the first notes,"  , lol.

I really loved it, Steve. Yeah, the tempo and pulse sounds great, very fluent with your fingers and nice flow to the music. I also like Blaise's advice on using interpretation right from the start. Alas, I also forget this advice when I start on a piece, overcome by my eagerness to get the notes in my fingers and then,  having to think about interpretation and expression only later by which time muscle memory builds up.

But you played very well, perhaps a few more versions before the challenge deadline ends?

Excellent performance Steve!   Speed is perfect. I agree with the advice from Blaise and Dale and would add that "listening" to yourself closely  during the process (assuming the notes are already well established under your fingers) is key to shaping  the piece and adding the dynamics and color you want. The balance between melody and accompaniment is very good with nice execution by your RH Thumb.  Bravo!

Thanks so much. I know what you're saying about eagerness. A new piece is like a shiny new toy, and I get excited and forget about the things I should be doing. This challenge has been a great experience to see how much a methodical approach can help, so I think, or at least hope, that I'll be able to stick to it in the future.

Excellent performance.  As for learning the interpretative right from the start, that is something I am just realizing/learning at my early stages.  I find it hard to do this when there are so many other things to think about, like note accuracy, keeping good form in the hands, and so on.  All will come in good time.  Just need to develop the habit of also dealing with interpretation at the beginning rather than later.

Thanks, Jim. I agree it's hard to do from the start. I get overwhelmed with so much to work on. One thing that has helped me in this challenge is learning smaller sections at a time. I used to try to learn a whole A or B section, but now I've been working on just a phrase at a time or even a measure in the case of difficult passages. I think this approach might help when adding interpretive elements as well. Thanks again for checking it out.

That is what I have been instructed to do, break it down to small segments (such as a phrase or a few measures or a single measure as appropriate) and make the interpretive elements part of that learning.  I think I have hesitated because I don't always trust my initial interpretation compared to more experienced instructors.  Nevertheless, I plan to give it a try in my next few pieces and see if it is easier to change my interpretation later, if needed, or just learn the interpretation later.  I expect it will be the former rather than the latter.

Wow! This is really impressive, Steve.
Great tempo which you handle really well. Very fluid and expressive performance.

It has been very interesting reading the discussion on learning a new piece and interpretation, especially considering how undisciplined I am in learning a new piece.🙄

I've also awakened (at least partially) :-). I've been working on Lob der Thranen by Schubert (among many other things). I first attempted this a few years ago but never really finished it. This first video is of progress to date hopefully it will improve over the next few weeks and I can post some more videos.

Well done Derek.  Such a beautiful piece.  Looking forward to your future videos to see what you can do with this.

Great  work on this so far., Derek!  You are bringing out the melody very nicely.  Wondering if in the spots where some inner strings are accidentally muted, if perhaps the LH fingers need to be a bit more curled to clear it;  not sure from this view...

I look forward to watching your continued progress on this beautiful piece.  Thanks for sharing it.

Well done so far, not an easy piece.. also one among many in my unfinished business..

‘especially second part is quiet tricky.. I think Martin had a livestream on this tune - and there is also a lesson.

Hi Barney. Thank you for your advice - really helpful. I'm afraid that I've recently fallen into the old trap of concentrating my practice sessions on learning the pieces that I want to play and ignoring technical exercises and you can see that my technique is suffering because of that. You probably remember the workshops that Mircea did many years ago - I practised those diligently almost every day for at least a couple of years afterwards. I need to get back to them. All the best Derek

Thanks Lars. I remember Martin's livestream - I started this around the same time that he did it - I'm using his annotated score - but it's unfinished since then! I will revisit the livestream and lesson. Best wishes Derek

This is a great start on reviving this beautiful piece, Derek. I have always really liked it but have never attempted it. Maybe someday. I look forward to seeing your progress on this.

Bravo,  Eric. The best yet. Very beautiful and a great job with bringing out the various voices. You capture well the guitar as an orchestra.

Wow!  This is beautiful, Eric!   Is it ever really a "final" version?  But this performance is so outstanding, I would vote yes.  Bravo!!

Excellent👏🏻—- I would suggest you did not roll so many of the chords. I think you would be told that in most masterclasses. - unless it is due to your index finger issue

This is outstanding, Eric. As  mentions, your separation of the voices, by dynamics as well as tone and phrasing, is excellent. Wonderful performance!
