What are you working on?

While Martin is on his family leave, several community members have expressed a desire to have a community-driven challenge as a way of connecting and sharing our musical journeys again. And so, with the authority vested in me by absolutely no one, I hereby initiate the "What are you working on?" Challenge!

So, let us all know what you're working on, and feel free to post some videos (or just sound tracks) so we can hear your progress and support one another.

Eric Phillips Thanks, but I am still pretty shy about recording myself. Even when I was playing marimba (which I did a lot better than I played guitar), I never watched nor listened to performances that I did.

Stefanie Mosburger-Dalz I probably won't be recording myself, but I will hopefully be playing it for an open mic this summer ... and if it goes well, maybe some other open mics. It is a great piece. I was introduced to this piece by guitarist Nick Cutroneo, and he does a great job with it.

Wow, Marc!  I don't check in here as often as I should.  That's quite a list.  I may have told you I was in the orchestra for a hot minute (while Phil Goldenberg was directing), but somehow (though I am also retired) didn't feel I had the time to properly devote to it.
I'm working at the moment on HVL Prelude 2, Couperin Les Barricades Mysterieuses, and Giuliani Op. 46 No. 9 (La Rose).  I'm also blundering thru Danza Brasilera, though I definitely don't have the speed on my arps to do it justice.

  • Hi. I think this is my first post on this forum. What am I working on? My fear of performing is number 1. Un Dia de Novembre (Leo Brouwer) is a piece I've been trying to learn to play. I do ok until I turn on any kind of recording device. My fingers get shaky, and I can't remember the notes or read the music, so I end up giving up. Today, I'm not doing that (giving up). I'm posting a link to a short section of that song, and I hope to participate in future challenges/forum sections and build up the courage to play without the fear.  https://www.mainsites.ca/Guitar/un%20dia%20de%20novembre.movie.mp4

    • Cliff Main Congratulations, Cliff! Getting over that hump of posting a recording of yourself for others to hear is a real milestone. I hope it is the first of many.

Your playing sounds really good. You get a good sound and you make it sound musical, not just mechanical. When you play the part up in fifth position (I think), your eighth notes are a little uneven. I'm probably the last person who should be suggesting this, but maybe playing it with a metronome could prove helpful.

      Welcome to the challenge!

Cliff Main  You don't have to be shy of your performance. This was very well played. Good work and keep recording yourself and posting them. 👍

Eric Phillips Thank you and I agree that my notes are off timing. When I record, I'm lucky most time to get 5 notes correct before messing up the entire recording. I'm still working on it, so I hope to improve (both playing and recording) over time. Thanks again.

Andre Bernier Thank you for the positive feedback! Much appreciated. I will continue to record and improve. I so much enjoy playing classical guitar and wish I would have started much younger, but you're never too old to learn.

Eric Phillips I think the first link I posted only had the audio. I'm still learning how to post here, so please forgive me for sending the second link. This should have audio/video. Thank you.

    • Cliff Main No apologies needed! It took me much longer to figure out all the strange steps to record, and then post a video. Do you actually play left-handed, or is the image just reversed?

Cliff Main Great job, Cliff. I am also learning Un Dia. The last section (where you stopped your recording) is a killer. I don't have fingernails, and I don't like the sound that I get out of that last section. But I just have to grind away and keep working on it. The first two measures of that section are sounding a bit better with every week of practice.

Cliff Main Just watched your video and that sounded beautiful.  Great balance between melody and accompaniment, something I am just learning to do.  Looking forward to seeing your progress here on TB.

Also, congratulations on posting your first audio and video on the site.  It wasn't that long ago that started posting my recordings, so I can appreciate the nerves involved with recording as I have a hard time recording as well.  You might want to consider to recording yourself more often, even if it is just for yourself, just so you get used to being in front of the camera.  As an exercise in recording, at least once per month I have a "performance day" in which I record every single piece of repertoire that I am working on at the time.  As you can imagine, the pieces are in various states of progress.  But what it does is that it forces me to get used to being in front of the camera.  Slowly I am getting better at recording myself.

The other thing I will share with you that has helped me is not to think of making a perfect recording but rather a recording the best I can do.  Perfect may be a great goal to have but it is not attainable.  Even the greats make errors.  I find by re-framing my mindset from perfection to doing my best, I am a bit more relaxed.

Remember, you always have the option of deleting a recording you don't like.

Jim King I think that your monthly 'recording day' is a great idea, Jim! And I think you are entirely correct in pointing out the role played by our generally misguided pursuit of 'perfection'. (I once heard the great cellist Yo-Yo Ma say that at some point early on in his career, he did indeed manage to deliver a technically perfect performance - something he had long been striving to achieve; and yet the result, he realized, was entirely unsatisfactory: he had allowed himself to become an automaton of sorts, disengaged from both the music and the audience. He vowed never to repeat the experience!)

Jim King Thank you for (both) your compliments on the balance in my playing and your suggestions to overcome my fear of recording. I had some rather bad experiences with recording and getting feedback in the past. EVERYONE HERE IS SO NICE!!! I do feel encouraged to record again and complete the piece. It's a nice goal to have and thank you all for the positive feedback. This place is amazing, and I love seeing all the videos that get posted.

Cliff Main Beautiful performance, Cliff. I share your struggles with recording. I have gotten better over time, marginally, (or maybe my standards have been adjusted), It does help to do it more often. I look forward to y9our progress on this piece.

    • Cliff Main Wow, do I feel ya!
I think I have more performance anxiety than most.  Yeah, I have a LOT of trouble recording a clean take of anything.  I've been doing open mics at my local CG society for experience; the anxiety is getting better (I think) but at a glacial pace.
One of the founders of the Brooklyn CG society who also struggles with anxiety is taking courses with Noa Kageyama at "The Bulletproof Musician" and based on his performance it seems to be working.  I'm considering taking the courses myself.
