BWV 996 Allemande

I have been able to revive this to a fairly good level. The trills need to be smoothed out in places and I still have tone issues but overall I feel I am in a reasonably good place with this piece. I still have some work to do on this but it feels promising.

When I get back from vacation I will try to post the Courante and then start to work on the Prelude. That will be a big challenge for me so I expect it to take quite a while.

Well played, Jack!! I found that you played fewer trills on this one compared to your first video "Bourree". Do you have any specific reason for adding fewer trills on this one or did you just follow what was indicated on the score?

Wai Thanks Wai. I wasn't aware of adding fewer trills to the Allemande than the bourree. In fact, I find my trills in the Bourree to be rather repetitive, I just haven't be able to work up a wider palette of trills for it. The first part of the Allemande does seem to have fewer trill and I could add some to its repeat. The second part (repeat) I am pretty happy with, both in where they are placed and their variety. I also have been working on the Allemande much longer than the Bourree.

  • Wonderful interpretation. So well played. You have great control of the ornamentsand a good feel for this allemande. It’s very intense and I love it this way. Inspiring.
    enjoy your vacation!

joosje Thanks Joosje. This has been in and out of my repertoire for years. I think this is probably better than I have ever played it before. I will continue to work on the trills, phrasing and dynamics but it all seems reachable at this point.

Next up  - the Courante, which will hopefully still be with me when I get back in a couple of weeks.

Very nice Jack.  Not sure what work you feel you need to do on this but I found it very enjoyable as is.  Thank you for posting.

Jim King Thanks Jim. I have some problems with the timing of my trills. Sometimes they take a little long to get started though they are getting close. Well, until I listen to David Russell play this piece. Then I have to take a deep breath and think 'back to the woodshed'.
