V. Audio & Video // FEB 8th
This week we will dip our toes into the wondrous world of music video production! For this we will work with the NLE (non linear editor) Davinci Resolve by Blackmagic Design

Since Version 17 is still in Beta-Phase, I highly recommend using Version 16. It is always nice to test new functions, but Beta-Software is often still quite buggy. In my case, definitely too buggy to do professional work with (and I already tested Version 17, I needed several re-installs to have it work only to find that I need to re-install again).

Please keep in mind that video production often puts high demands on your computer, so you might find it very slow or nearly impossible to work with DaVinci if you have outdated or not so powerful hardware.
Minimum system requirements for macOS
- Mac 10.14.6 Mojave
- 16 GB of system memory. 32 GB when using Fusion
- Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 10.4.1 or later
- Integrated GPU or discrete GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM.
- GPU which supports Metal or OpenCL 1.2.
Minimum system requirements for Windows
- Windows 10 Update
- 16 GB of system memory. 32 GB when using Fusion
- Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 10.4.1 or later
- Integrated GPU or discrete GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM
- GPU which supports OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 11
- NVIDIA/AMD/Intel GPU Driver version – As required by your GPU
- A minimum NVIDIA driver version of 451.82 is recommended.
Minimum system requirements for Linux
- CentOS 7.3
- 32 GB of system memory
- Blackmagic Design Desktop Video 10.4.1 or later
- Discrete GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM
- GPU which supports OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 11
- NVIDIA/AMD Driver version – As required by your GPU
- A minimum NVIDIA driver version of 450.51.06 is recommended.

Thanks for the lighting information! I changing the camera aperture to 1.8, which seemed to help and may be good enough. But if not, I have your suggestions for lighting options. I appreciate your expertise.
The recording you did here is awesome! The video and audio is wonderful. (Is that the natural ambiance of that space,a s there is plenty of reverb?). The subject was quite interesting on many levels-- the history of the music and Segovia, as well as the Hauser-- fascinating!
I can certainly understand why you are hired for these recordings-- the results speak for themselves. thanks for sharing it!!

Barney Hi Barney! Yes, you can control the amount of light with three options in you camera: the aperture (the opening of the iris of your lens), the shutter speed (the amount of time light is hitting your sensor until the next frame) and the ISO (the digital sensitivity of your sensor).
Thank you for your kind words! We added no artificial reverb, as we wanted to accentuate the phenomenal sound of the guitar within the great acoustics of the church! We plan to release another video on April 2nd with music by Rebay!

Barney Hi Barney, considering your questions about trimming in the timeline of Davinci Resolve:
You have several options to trim the beginning or the of a clip.
Using the Selection Mode with Shortcut a
- Make sure that you are in the "Edit"-Page by navigating to Workspace - Switch to Page - Edit. That way your mouse will be able to do actual edits in the timeline!
- Now on your timeline, hover your mouse (in the normal Selection Tool, Shortcut "a") over the beginning of a clip until the mouse changes its appearance (as shown in the in attached clip "Trimming the beginning") the the clip in, this will shorten the beginning!
Using the Blade Tool with Shortcut b
- This is pretty self-explanatory, you simply click at the position where you want to split the clip with the Blade Tool (shortcut "b"). Then you select one of the clips and delete it (right click on the Clip and select "Cut")
Your next question was about deleting the area between some clips in the timeline. This is called a "Ripple Edit".
- Left-click on the space between two clips. This will highlight the area in grey
- Right-click and select "Ripple Delete". This will delete the space and move all the clips up the timeline (see attached clip "Ripple Delete").

What about trimming the ending of the video: that is , when I stop playing the guitar, the footage where I get up to turn off the audio and video equipment. This needs to be deleted as well. What is the best approach to handle this?

Barney oh, did we forget to give you the tag?
You definitely earned it with your continuous interest in the topic! Trimming the ending can be accomplished the same way! Either hover with the Selection Tool (a) over the right edge of the clip, then click and drag or use the Blade Tool (b) to split the clip and cut the rest away as mentioned before!
