  • Hi Emmanuel , I would really love to join. But on Jan 13th, at 8PM CET, it is 2:00am in my time. I would most likely not be able to play the guitar at 2am.  So this time is not possible. I hope I can have a chance in one of your furture interactive master classes. I was wanting to play the Se Ela Perguntar by Dilermando Reis. Happy New Year!

    • Hi Khiem Nguyen , sorry to hear you can't join but that's completely understandable! Glad you've been working on Reis' Se Ela Perguntar. It's a beautiful piece! I hope I might get to hear it on another occasion. Until then, hope you have a Happy New Year!

    • Emmanuel i have a request.  Had aso mentioned this to Martin and Mircea  .

Tonebase is now truly international, which means timezones become very critical for reach.  CET and US time zones may be hard for South and southeast asia, APAC in general.  We tend to miss these lovely sessions, especially live.  My humble request is to have sessions conducive to our timezone.  For example I was with Classical Guitar Shed(CGS) and they would organize two separate open mikes, one centered around US time zone and one centered around Asia.  Could Tonebase make this a priority this year.  Thank you.

    Hi Emmanuel,

Will you have time for me to play Granada by Albeniz for this Masterclass?  I believe you know this piece very well, as I've seen some beautiful excerpts you've done.  I would greatly appreciate your guidance to help me improve and polish performance on this wonderful piece.  Thanks, Barney

Emmanuel Thanks for including me.  Hope I can do it justice live(stage freight, distractions, etc, haha).  There are several versions out there.  I generally use the Segovia edition.  Not sure which one you play.

    • Barney I have Manuel Barrueco's at hand. If you happen to have the Segovia edition in digital format and are able to post it here, that might come in handy. No worries if not. Looking forward to it!

    • @Emmanuel Barney Barney great Emmanuel. I have added the scanned pages of the score of David Russell that is the one I am working on. Just for you both (Barney and you) if you want to look something at. In the bar 21 the cord with G flat as the melody  a forth with point ( I do not know in english we say "negra con puntillo" ). I brake the duration of that G  after "2 " times duration (sorry !!!!) to be able to reach in tempo the first 8TH of the next bar. As alternative I could sacrify the G falt of the 4th string in the fist accord doing directly in position VII a small "ceja"? with  3,2,1 strings and D flat, G flat (melody) and B respectively with D in 4th string free in that way the G flat melodic will stay all the length of the bar (the 3 times duration let' say). I hope you understand what I mean. I don`t know how Segovia wrote this bar or phrase. Also will be interesting for me to look how you Barney play the bars 31 through 39. I do like DR says with that difficult stretching between the fingers 3 and 4  of LH. Also interesting for me the melodies of bars 64-66 and 72-73.  Anyway the main points are those of Barney but I share with you the passages that I am dealing with specially the LH. For me will be very interesting to see all through the piece. Thanks a lot.

Nora Torres-Nagel Hi Nora.  Thank you for posting the DR pages!  For measure 21, I like DR's version better than Segovia's because the "G" melody note on second string will ring for that full measure, with nice accompaniment.  Segovia version plays an open G major chord (3rd fret)with some harmonics afterwards and then jump to 7th fret for remainder of the phrase.  I may switch to the DR version for this passage.

In measures 31 through 39, DR's version has a beautiful harmony and sound.  However, it is quite challenging to play.  Segovia using single notes "followed by" the chord harmony, so very easy to play and still sounds good, but not as nice as DR.

I'm sure Emmanuel will have great advice for us and help sort out the best choices to consider.

I look forward to this session, and happy that Nora also is interested in this wonderful piece.

Many years ago, my father loved this piece and often listened to it played by various guitarists, including Segovia, but also Alicia de Larrocha.  I wasn't able to play it while he was still alive.
