Jakob Wagner: Making the invisible visible - Hidden meanings in Bach’s Ciaccona

Since Andrés Segovia’s transcription in the 1940s the legendary Ciaccona from Bach's second violin partita in d-minor is a timeless favorite in the guitarist's repertoire. After closer examination this wordless instrumental work turns out to be full of chorale quotations and cryptographically hidden names and dates, that become visible via the unusual method of Gematria.

Together with the German guitarist and musicologist Jakob Wagner we will try to decipher the multilayered and enigmatic language of this masterpiece and make the invisible visible.
