Intro to Video Editing

Are you tired of badly lit videos? Do you want to bring your home videos to the next level?

While we're probably not going to produce the next Hollywood Blockbuster (...well, who knows?), I aim to give you the basic tools to edit your video so you can publish your best video yet!

You want to slowly fade out your video? You want to add titles? Synchronize it with an external audio recording? Or have a moody black & video for the next "Un Dia de Noviembre" recording? Let's do it!

We are going to look at free software like Davinci Resolve and Shotcut for editing (and maybe OBS for recording with your Webcam, if you'd like to know about that).

  • What are your experiences with recording and editing videos? What software have you used and what equipment do you have?
  • What would the perfect music video look like for you?

Let me know about that via replying to this thread! Recently I've been enjoying a lot videos that have been captured with only take, like this phenomenal Cello recording or this beautifully done Recorder - Lute duo

Martin I’m not doing that one Martin. I have too many musical projects going on to be involved in everything! But when I saw the announcement for the video course I said, “I have to check that one out!”

I used to own an entertainment agency and did all the video editing for my bands on Final Cut Pro back in the early 2000's.   Later I taught FCP editing at Kent State University in the Journalism Department.  A lot has changed (for the better) since then.  I love shooting and editing and would like to get back into it for and with my guitar students.  Looking forward to your seminar.  I have so many questions.   Types of mic's, placement, etc.  What kind of cameras?  Multiple cameras/angles.  Editing software.   Creating movement with dolly's, panning, steady-cam etc. More.

george I hope you will get some insights into different workflows, I am sure that you have a super strong foundation to build upon as you're already a professional in that field, but each piece of software nowadays changes so much over the course of a few years!

Martin Hello Martin, this is a great idea for a workshop ! It is really not easy  ( for me ) to make good videos 😥

    • What are your experiences with recording and editing videos? What software have you used and what equipment do you have? I recorded with OBS - using a Logitech 720p HD Cam ( 10 years old... 🤣 ), two LED Roundlamps and a Focusrite Safire USB in combination with a pair of active Ribbons ( Superlux R102 )... Editing with I-Movie on a 2009 iMac 27" ( 250SSD 16GB Intel core Duo 3,06 GHZ ...running on macOS High Sierra)
    • What would the perfect music video look like for you? Good lightning, good sound and some camera-angel changing during the video...For example - the actual Siccas-Videos look and sound very good to me.

There are often very easy problems, I cannot fix....you know my uploaded videos - and they look very poor.... when I record in OBS mit maximum (1080x720P) and the light is right, it looks somehow ok. Asturias was 1,2GB after recording in mp4 on the drive. After importing in Imovie and trying out different settings, the video looks always very poor ( viel schlechter als die OBS-Aufnahme - abgespielt mit Final-Video-Player )...after editing with Imovie and uploading to youtube, it looks like puke. Maybe its wrong settings - I don't know. But this things would be very interesting.

I found advertising on youtube about the Roland VRC-01 .... can I use such a device to record in a live situation ? Maybe it needs not so much editing afterwards ? ... or is it only for streaming ?

1000 Questions .... maybe you can involve this questions into your workshop ?

    Thank you very much 🦸‍♂️

    Best Regards

    Olli

Olli I will try to involve as much as possible in that workshop, all of us are in for a wild ride, haha! 🧙‍♂️

I am pretty sure your problem lies somewhere in the export options when you're saying that everything looks fine after the OBS-Recording! I'll give you an overview over the best codecs to use!

Looking forward to this too. My experience is with a now faulty Canon camcorder which had an external Sony ECM mic plugged in. Editing (top and tailing, plus intro and exit text, only) all done in iMovie. Current equipment, Apple all the way - MacBook, iPad, iPhone. Thinking of getting a Scarlet Focusrite and downloading Reaper, then I'll learn that and be stuck as to how to get audio and video to match up! My own dream video would be well-lit, fairly close up, zooming in to RH or LH at relevant musical points, without the dreadful background hiss you've talked about before. Basic for some! Additionally - it would be great to make a video with the screen in 2 halves (one the straight musical take and the other - the zooming in and out to the LH and RH). Could upgrade my camcorder? Would it be worth it? Really interested in all your views! Thanks!

Fiona Upgrading gear is always fun, but it gets expensive after a while, talking from experience 🙈

The Focusrite Scarlet is an excellent Audio Interface, I've been using mine for over 10 years now!

  • It was again a great workshop. Thanks a lot Martin.  Useful and informative. So much information, I couldn’t even take every word in. Also, the chat was very lively and asking my attention. With lots of info in a sort of polyphony with the stream. I have not been able to follow all of that. Dominic wrote that the chat would be available, but I can’t see it. I can watch the stream again, but it  would be so great if there was some kind of list of all used/ useful equipment (don’t mean brands but categories) and software, with sources and possibly pros and cons.

Martin Hi Martin. Just wondered what your thoughts are on this acoustic isolator for home recording where the room acoustics are not good:
