Music Schools, Conservatories, Universities - What to Expect?

Hi friends! In this livestream, I'm going to tackle a topic suggested by Brooke which got a bunch of upvotes in the Live Suggestions Forum

Martin and I were originally thinking about hosting a roundtable about it, but since it was taking a while to materialize, we've decided to just let me tackle the topic.

After all, I've been continuously enrolled in a music education institution since the age of 6, I'm currently working on my 6th university-level degree, and I've studied in 4 countries on 2 continents, so I know quite a bit about this topic 😁 hope you enjoy!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to study at an institution like a music school, conservatory, or university? Are you perhaps debating whether you should go and study music professionally at some point in life? Would you like to know whether you should encourage your friends, students, children or loved ones to go through the process? Do you have questions about admission and auditions? Or are you just curious about what life as a music student is like?

This livestream will walk you through the pros and cons of institutional music education from the point of view of someone currently working on his sixth college-level and second doctoral-level degree in music. Join Head of Guitar Mircea Gogoncea, graduate teaching assistant at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles for an overview of how music education works at all ages and levels in various countries, as well as insights into admissions and auditioning.

We are going to be using this thread to gather suggestions and questions!

  • What questions do you have on this topic?
  • Any particular area you would like me to focus on?

Okay, i'll throw out a bunch of thoughts:

What kind of students do well/not so well in this structured environment?

What is a typical week of work consist of  in hours or material?

What would you change about your experience, curriculum, etc.?

Do you work with others cooperatively or it is competitive? Politics?

What was your best lessons, lectures, words of advice that stick with you?

    Breakthrough/breakdown moments?

Most liked/ least like music you had to learn?

Performance and competition focus.   It is a good thing?

Is there enough emphasis on new composition skills or is mostly the classic based repertoire?

  • Since I live in India are there any music schools, conservatories or universities that allow for a long distance primarily remote study with some visits, towards a degree.  Would you even recommend such an approach.  And do they take students in their 50s :-)  This could be a plan after I get through my tonebase study :-)
