    Leo Brouwer - El juego de los abalorios

    The English equivalent is The Glass Bead Game, and it was written after the Hermann Hesse novel of the same name. There are still things I want to work on, but I'm very happy with where it is for now.

       Are you looking at prices on their website or on another site like SBM, because I found that they are cheaper when I buy directly from them. They indeed have different interesting lines of trebles and basses and sets. I used to be a big fan of carbon trebles in my previous life, before I stopped doing any music for roughly a decade, and since I started back a few years ago, and probably because of my instrument has a spruce top, I now find them way too bright. I also find them harder to record with, they produce some weird artifacts that are hard to deal with after.

       Thanks for the reply. That's really interesting that you mentioned trouble recording with carbons. I switched to La Bella Vivace a few months back, which are carbon trebles. I really like them because they last, and I have no issues with intonation, even when they're getting older. I record in a very small room, and I haven't been happy with any of my recent recordings. I listened to some older recordings, and I think they sound much better, but I haven't been able to match them, even copying the same position, mic placement, processing, etc. I used to always use either Augustine Reds or D'Addario EJ45 Pro-Arte, and it never occurred to me that the strings might be causing my current issues. Thanks for the tip.

       Maybe you're having the same issue than me, I've never been able to get the sound I want with carbon trebles on recording, even worst with the spruce top... restring with nylon trebles and tell me if it sounds better! BTW I very like the Knobloch QZ nylon trebles, they are clearer than EJ45 and Imperials.

       Wow!  This blend of Argentine syncopated tango rhythm with its atmospheric effect by Piazzola is amazing on guitar delivered by your hands, Dale.  Bravo!

        Thanks! The title does translate to the "Tango of the Dawn" which refers to the death and rebirth of Maria from Piazzolla's operetta.

       This is really interesting, Dale, and wonderfully performed. I have never heard this (or even heard of it). You do a great job bringing all of its disparate elements into a coherent musical whole. Well done!

       Thanks, Jack.  This tango is part of a Suite for Guitar comprising five pieces that Agustin Carlevaro arranged from Piazzolla's operetta that he wrote in collaboration with the Argentine poet, Horacio Ferrer in 1968.  Unfortunately, every time I write the title of the operetta, Tonebase censors my post so I will simply say the title contains the name Maria and the capital of Argentina.

       Thanks, Blaise. Agustin does a great job with his arrangenents of Piazzolla's music. I have more than 20 arrangrments that he made. For the Tangata, Abel also made some edits to Agustin's arrangement which I have followed.

       That is awesome, Dale. I love how Piazzolla's music can be very pretty, but also keep its edge. This arrangement works very well, I think.

       Thanks, Steve. I agree that Piazzolla can combine great melodic lines with a syncopated dissonance. And, Agustin Carlevaro really can apply that well for solo guitar.

       Thanks, Jim. It is even more interesting when you place it in the context of Piazzolla's operetta. This tango is performed upon the death of the heroine of the opera and signifies both death and rebirth of Maria.

    BWV 996 Prelude, Allemande and (separate recording) Courante 

    I couldn't get all 3 in one recording. I actually didn't get any of them in 1 recording but each has some good moments and show promise. The courante in particular pretty much fell apart on the second part, however its repeat held up pretty well. I just noticed I didn't trim out the opening stumble - opps.

    Hopefully I can get a decent recording, either as one or separately, before tomorrow. I am hoping that by posting these recordings I will be more focussed to get a good recording.

       Very impressive that you have taken on this monumental suite.  It is definitely coming along nicely.  The Prelude flows as does the Allemande. And your ornaments are amazing. Obviously,  the Courante needs the most work but you still got through it and had some excellent passages. It seems to me, it only needs a little more time to mature under your fingers and, of course, capturing it in a good recording which can be challenging no matter how well one knows a piece. In any case, congrats and welcome back from Bali.
