Jack's Personal Practice Dairy - and cow farm (opps)

I am reviving Weiss's Fantasia which feel into disrepair because of Mircea's planting preparations  virtuoso challenge, then Ashley'Etude Composition challenge, then Koshkin's etude Challenge, then Martin's  VL Etude #1 .......... Curse You Tonebase!!!!

OK -  sorry,  I'm better now.

I have been concentrating on getting it re-memorized (don't get me started!) and re-fingered (what did I tell you!).  I will try to post a video today or tomorrow.

After all the milking is done. (Just noticed I misspelled Diary.)

  • I used Deric Kennard’s transcription published in 1958 by Scott & Co, London. It had a D natural. I changed it to D sharp after listening to recordings and looking at many other arrangements in D minor.  D-sharp sounds more fitting as the harmony is going from E minor to B7.  The D is B7 is a D-sharp.

Bill Young I just downloaded the lute manuscript from the London Manuscript but haven't had time to go over it. That will take an effort for me to decipher as I'm not use to Lute tuning and tablature. I can figure it out but it will require some time. The d# fits common classical harmony though the Baroque era was still a bit of transition from the Renaissance, especially in an improvisatory section. The d natural is acceptable (if that is how it is in the manuscript) but I do think I prefer the d#.

This is me 'getting back on my horse' after my disastrous rehearsal performance. There are still some glitches but it holds up pretty well. Perhaps The concert will fare better.

    Back to work!

Jack Stewart Fantastic! Continue to record yourself and and maybe employ some slow-motion mental training in order train your focus on the virtual stage!

That was a beautiful and intense presentation of that piece! I like the overarching build up to the climax of the introduction right up to the beginning of the fuge!

Martin Thanks Martin.  I agree that I should record myself more often not only to show progress and and areas for improvement, but also for 'performing' practice.

I have also decided to re-approach this piece with very slow deliberate practice and to pull it apart by voice and segments to refine my interpretation.

Jack Stewart superb Jack really well played. I couldn't play at the dress rehearsal but I have played live quite a few times and I suffer from nerves doing that I think I find doing the videos more nerve wracking than the live performance. Probably because any mistakes are there for ever. You seemed pretty cool doing this. Well done

    • Derek This is really sounding solid.  Such a great piece and you have excellent clarity of voices in the fugue.  Thanks for sharing your practice.  I am sympathetic with the challenge of performance nerves.  But it shouldn't keep us from staying at that task!

    • Jack Stewart I have enjoyed your playing very much Jack....I don't know why...maybe we will all overcome the issue just by performing among us...as Martin says...👍

Nora Torres-Nagel Thanks Nora, I appreciate that. I have persistent problem of going blank when performing. This gives me a 'safe' place to work on that.
