any tonebase lesson or youtube on different RH free strokes

especially those playing from the right side of the nail? I saw one by Alice Artzt but it seems her free strokes are angled to hit the strings on the left side of the nail? Thanks!

  • Look through the Tom Viloteau lessons.    He's got some good advice, but also watch Vladimir Gorbach's fast scales lesson.  he doesn't talk about right side of nail, but just watch his hand and you'll learn a lot.

  • I was wondering about something similar. Like many guitarists, I usually play with the left side of the nail, especially on slow pieces. But when I play fast pieces (for eg. Etude no.1 by HVL), my A finger is hits the high E string with the right side of the nail.

While I've worked out the nail shape for my I and M fingers (ramp from left to right), I'm still not sure of my A fingernails. So, I've kept that more of a neutral shape.

I agree with Dave on Thomas Viloteau. I watched one of his YouTube lessons on nails. He seems to have a ramp on the A fingernails going from right to left. I might be wrong.

You could check out Mircea Gogoncea's livestream on nail shaping as well. If I remember correctly, he commented on someone who had an A fingernail shaped with a ramp from right to left.

Nijwm Bwiswmuthiary thanks! I just came across a forum thread on delcamp that said something similar that some play the right with the a finger but on the left on i and m.

I believe it was Mircea in one of his livestreams that mentioned he would hold a file along the string and 'play' each finger so that the file would mark the angle he used. Then he would file his nail to match that.

I don't recall his mentioning the right side of the nail, but this technique would give an idea how you could file your nails to match how you play.

It probably makes more sense seeing his demonstration than my telling it.

Jack Stewart thanks Jack! I was intrigued by Thibaut Garcia's hand position and in one of the videos he mentioned the initial contact of his attack is always from the right side of his nails.  Then i dug deeper and found Alice Artzt's video. They all seemed to be from the Ida Presti's school.  But there are so little resources that I can find on this technique.

I'm recently trying to re-learn some of my RH techniques and I realize when I fully relax my right arm and wrist, my attacks tended to be leaning right than left as I used to play.  Probably just my imagination but when I'm experimenting, the tone sounded snappier and louder and I'm currently playing without nails.
