I'm excited by this! I'm working on a few South American pieces at the moment - Milonga by Jose Cardoso, some Villa Lobos and some Barrios. Hopefully I will get chance to record some for this challenge!

Sounds great Derek, what are you working on from Barrios?

Hi Blaise. I'm trying to improve Julia Florida at the moment so hopfully I'll record that. I keep trying to get the Waltz op 8 no 4 to a reasonable level so I'll start practising the tricky arpeggio section. If I can get through that in a month then I'll be happy :-)

Great to see the Community challenge back! I'm working on a couple of Brouwer pieces and some Villa Lobos at the moment but looking forward to exploring other Latin American composers/pieces

You're right, Challenges are a formula that we all like! What other composers are you interested in?

I've found that throughout each community challenge I've discovered composers who were new to me - for instance in the female composers challenge  I discovered Tatiana Stachak and Maria Linnemann and have been working on compositions  by both - I hope to do the same with this challenge

This is so true, every time someone proposes a work or a composer that I don't know!

Glad to see this! I've been working on some of Ponce's preludes, and always some Brouwer. I was reading a book about him, and I've been learning about some of his Cuban influences and contemporaries as well.

Of course, always Brouwer, lol! I've been working on some of his new studies, the Preludios Epigramáticos, and one of his new pieces, Preludios Los amores difíciles. I'm not sure if any will rise to the top and be ready for presentation, but they're all a lot of fun.

Didn't know about Preludios Los amores difíciles, a recent work?

They were written for and recorded by Claudio Giuliani in 2021, but were just released by his publishing house this year. I was happy to see something by him that was closer to my range, since most of his later works are way over my head.

Thanks for launching the Latin America Music Challenge.  Let's get this Challenge started!  Here are two Microestudios #12 & #13 by Abel Carelvaro.  The Uruguayan Maestro published a set of 20 Microestudios in the 1990s, and several additional unpublished Microestudios which can be found on the Abel Carlevaro Online Library. These Miscroestudios not only tackle technical issues but also are meant to be performed in concert alone or as part of a set.

Thanks and glad you like these Carlevaro pieces.  He was a great Maestro who wrote more than 60 pieces for solo guitar, three guitar concertos and other ensemble works. Check out the Abel Carlevaro School of Guitar Group in the Tonebase Forum to learn more.

This is great. I’m working on different repertoire now, but I will make some room for practicing a new piece in the style for the challenge. Might be #3 of Brouwers tres apuntes, the Bulgarian song (which theme also appears in his study #7 and in Hika). Or another Cuban composer, Julian Orbon. His preludio y danza is a very good composition (some motives are also recognised in Brouwers Cuban folk themes). The whole piece is too much for one month, but I could work on the preludio first. And it’s a good idea to revisit Carlevaro’s micro studies,. With thanks to  for his initiative and beautiful performance …
